Apple starts selling in Turkey again having ramped up prices
Last week, it emerged that Apple had stopped selling in Turkey, preventing anyone from placing orders on its Turkish website. Without warning or explanation, Apple has re-opened its website to Turkish customers, but with an expensive catch.
On average, devices are now TL 2,958 (~US$239) pricier than they were previously. In other words, Apple has added 23.51% to the prices of devices like the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 14 and the new iPad mini. However, some configurations have become significantly more expensive. For example, the mid-tier MacBook Pro 16 now costs TL 38,099 (~US$3,075), an increase of TL 6,900 (~US$557) from its previous price.
As it stands, the currency remains on a downwards trajectory, with US$1 now worth over TL 12.6. President Erdogan continues to defend interest rates cuts too, resulting in a further 4% weakening today alone. Hence, if the Turkish Lira fails to stabilise, Apple could push prices even higher than they are now.
