Apple iPhone 7s may incorporate glass casing
According to Catcher Technology CEO Allen Horng, the future iPhone 7s could be equipped with a glass enclosure. The company has been a major supplier of aluminum for Apple and its CEO attempted to allay fears from investors about rumors of the glass iPhone as such a model could impact revenue for Catcher Technology.
iPhone made of glass
Rumors of a glass iPhone began circulating even before the official statement from the Catcher Technology CEO. Since Catcher is primarily an aluminum production company, the move to glass is a worrying prospect. According to Nikkei, Apple alone has been responsible for over 33 percent of Catcher Technology revenue. The supplier may be forced to expand its range of clients by taking orders from Chinese manufacturers to prepare for any reduced aluminum orders from Apple.
No iPhone without a metal frame
Nonetheless, a full glass body is an unlikely scenario according to Horng. He believes that an iPhone without a metal frame is impossible for the foreseeable future as a metal frame backbone is still required for strength.
A number of high-end Samsung smartphones currently incorporate Gorilla Glass on both the front and back sides of the chassis including the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S7.
