Apple is reportedly developing Apple Watch models equipped with cameras, aiming to turn the device into a more advanced AI-powered wearable. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, adding cameras will enable the smartwatch to “see the outside world” and deliver contextual information through AI. This move is in line with Apple’s broader strategy to expand its Visual Intelligence technology. At the moment, Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology relies on third-party AI models like ChatGPT and Google, but the company is looking to transition to in-house solutions.
According to Gurman, Apple is exploring different camera placements for its standard and Ultra Apple Watch models. For the standard version, the camera would be embedded within the display, much like an iPhone. Meanwhile, the Ultra model would feature a side-mounted camera near the digital crown and button. This design choice banks on the Ultra’s larger size, which would make it easier for users to point the camera at objects to scan them.
As mentioned. Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology, which would power these AI features, is critical to these projects. At the moment, this technology is limited to iPhones. However, Gurman has mentioned that Apple has plans to incorporate this technology into future devices like Apple Watches, which we just discussed, as well as the rumoured camera-equipped AirPods.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on an AI-powered Apple Watch, you’ll have to wait until at least 2027. Apple’s AI teams are still working on refining the technology, which may take a while.
