Users of unlocked Moto Z handsets that were sold directly by Motorola have been waiting for Android Nougat since mid-November when those having the Verizon Wireless variant received the new firmware. While their wait is not over yet, we now have an official confirmation of Nougat's release for the unlocked Moto Z.
"Motorola has confirmed to us that Nougat will be rolling out to the unlocked Moto Z in February," reveals Android Central. Unfortunately, "the spokesperson neglected to say when in the shorter month it would arrive" but at least added that both the Verizon and unlocked Moto Z Play handsets are scheduled to receive Android 7.0 Nougat in March.
Unlocked handsets usually receive the updates first, since there is less testing needed. In this case, the Verizon variant arrived in July, while the unlocked Moto Z became available at the end of September. Due to this fact, they are on different software paths, with separate teams working on them - the unlocked version is optimized for both T-Mobile and AT&T.
