60% Acer TravelMate P449 review: A sensible, understated design marred by a poor display unit
Source: Tech2 English Archive.org version
This is a laptop that someone will expect to use for at least a couple of years, if not more. I’d rather not spend that time staring at a screen as bad as this one.

Acer TravelMate P449-G2-M-55XW

The Acer TravelMate P449-G2-M is not only low in price, it is also compact for a 14-inch laptop, which makes it perfect for people who are constantly on the go or students who will benefit from the small size and functionality. Most notebooks have a 15.6-inch screen, which makes them less portable than the smaller ones. Users looking for a more compact 14-inch device will soon find that most models with this form factor are more expensive. The TravelMate P4 falls into the category of the HP ProBook 440 and is a good alternative to it. Acer’s device does not surprise with its design or build quality. The all-plastic construction is just about average. The hinges are sturdy, but opening the notebook with one hand is virtually impossible. The whole plastic construction has a matte finish, both inside and outside of the body. This allows for a firm grip when holding the device, but unfortunately, it becomes a major fingerprint magnet. The design is rather simple and minimalistic. On the lid, there is only an Acer logo in the bottom left corner. When the laptop is turned upside down, two loudspeakers, exhaust vents, and two lids that lead to the RAM and storage department present themselves. The device is quite portable with its 14-inch form factor and weight of 1.80 kg. It is not the lightest 14-inch device on the market, yet still light enough to carry it with ease.

As for hardware specifications, under the hood is Intel’s Core i7-7200U processor, which is part of 7th-generation Kaby Lake CPUs. The graphic processor is Intel’s HD Graphics 620. It is usually found in ULV (ultra-low voltage) processors from the 6th generation of chips (Skylake). It has 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB of NVMe storage. The Acer TravelMate P4 furthermore has an IPS panel. The diagonal of the screen is 14 inches, while the resolution is 1920x1080 pixels. Individual pixels can not be discerned when viewing from a distance greater than 80 cm. Connectivity-wise, the TravelMate P4 has all the necessary ports: On the left side there is a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) port, standard VGA out, full-size HDMI, one USB-3.0 and one USB Type-C port as well as a 3.5-mm combo jack. Moving to the front, there are two indication LED lights: One lights up when the notebook is working and the other when it is charging. On the right side, there is an SD- and SC-card slot (something not found on an ordinary notebook), three USB-2.0 ports, a Kensington lock, and the charging port. A total of five USB ports makes connecting several external memory or peripheral devices at once possible (such as keyboards and mice).

Acer TravelMate P4 TMP449 review – a budget business notebook or an excellent school assistant
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
To sum things up we can say that TravelMate P4 TMP449 is a good entry-level business notebook. You get nice input devices and excellent connectivity options. It is lightweight and portable with its 14-inch form factor. Battery life is also above average. The hardware isn’t anything special and you can’t expect high performance for it. However, the Core i5 and the integrated graphics are just enough to run some modest games or even applications like Photoshop.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
