The manufacturer Aaeon is certainly not unknown in the SBC segment and has now introduced a new device. The so-called Up Squared TWL can be ordered with an Intel Core 3 N355, Intel N250 or Intel N150. Depending on the specific configuration, it features up to 16GB LPDDR5 memory and eMMC storage with a capacity of up to 128GB.
The board measures approximately 3.37 by 3.54 inches and sports a GPIO header, as is typical for single-board computers. Sensors and actuators can be connected for various projects. For connecting mass storage devices, there are also three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, which support high data transfer rates. On the other hand, the two Gigabit Ethernet ports are pretty basic in terms of speed.
Moreover, the SBC can be used like a traditional desktop PC, as external monitors can be easily connected via HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.2 and eDisplayPort 1.3. Aaeon further advertises two RS232/422/485 ports that are accessible via a header. This particular connectivity option is often used to hook up other devices and machines, often in industrial settings.
Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not provide any pricing details. If users are not necessarily focused on Windows as an operating system, the Raspberry Pi 5 (4GB version from $75 on Amazon) is probably a significantly more affordable alternative, although it’s also less powerful than the Aaeon Up Squared TWL SBC.
