While browsing the ASDA Direct website, I stumbled upon the new Android-based Arnova 8 Tablet, which is manufactured by the French consumer electronics company Archos. This mini-computer was recently introduced and because of its price tag (US $161,39) it got many people excited. Nevertheless, when one takes a closer look at the configuration the excitement begins to slowly evaporate.
If you are looking for a basic (and cheap) Tablet PC, the Arnova 8 might just be the one. Apparently, the mini-PC available at ASDA is powered by an ARM central processing unit with a clock frequency of 600MHz. In addition, the device sports an 8-inch resistive touch-screen enabled 4:3 display that features a native resolution of 800-by-600 pixels.
The internal storage capacity of this Archos Tablet is reportedly 4GB and the operating system is a Google Android 2.1 Éclair. Further specs include a Wireless LAN 802 b/g module, two built-in speakers, G-sensor, USB interface and a memory card reader slot.
The Arnova 8 is priced at £99, weighs about 500g and supposedly has a battery life of up to 5.5hrs (video playback) or up to 25hrs (music playback).
