AMD's Zen 3 based Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX processors will be a lot easier to purchase July 2022 onwards ↺
AMD's decision to make the Zen 3-based Threadripper 5000WX series of HEDT processors OEM-only didn't sit well with fans and enthusiasts. Practices such as locking down CPUs to a specific vendor made it impossible for users to get their hands on the hardware via the second-hand goods market. That is set to change soon, as AMD plans to widen the availability of the Threadripper 5000WX processors.
Starting in July 2022, three SKUs, namely the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX, AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5975WX and AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5965WX will be available to a wide range of system integrators. Currently, they are exclusive to a handful of enterprise-grade desktops such as the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 and Dell Precision 7865. AMD has also promised that DIY PC builders will be able to get their hands on the aforementioned processors later this year.
Power users looking to squeeze extra performance out of their processors will be pleased to know that the Threadripper 5000WX series sold on the open market will support CPU and memory overclocking. However, OEMs have to bake the functionality into the WRX80 chipset-based motherboards. Users on previous-generation WRX80 motherboards will need to install a BIOS update before the processors can work.
