AMD reportedly reviving the Ryzen 7 5800X3D as AM4 10th anniversary CPU amid DDR5 RAM crisis

There is a growing buzz around the rumor that AMD’s most popular Zen 3-based X3D CPU is making a return. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is reportedly making a comeback, according to hardware insider HXL. AMD is positioning it as a special “AM4 10th Anniversary Edition” CPU, and it’s said to launch in the second quarter of 2026. This development comes months after AMD hinted at CES that it would be reviving older Zen 3 CPUs to allow customers to continue using DDR4 memory.

The AM4 socket first appeared in 2016, and the upcoming anniversary edition of the Ryzen 7 5800 X3D seems like AMD’s way to celebrate the platform that continues to live on.

The leak showcased the new chip boasting the exact specs as the original variant released in 2022. For context, the Ryzen 7 5800 X3D features eight cores and 16 threads, operates at a base clock of 3.4 GHz that boosts to 4.5 GHz under load, and includes a massive 96 MB of 3D V-Cache.

From the leak, it’s apparent that AMD isn’t changing anything under the hood. It’s the same silicon with new packaging.

While this might seem like a nostalgic move by AMD, it’s quite practical given that DDR5 memory prices have shot up in recent months. 32GB DDR5 kits, which normally sell for about $90, now cost between $300 and $500, or even more in some cases. Given the volatile market, reviving AM4’s tried-and-tested platform will allow gamers to continue building PCs without breaking the bank.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D originally launched at an MSRP of $449 and dropped as low as $268. However, it was discontinued almost two years ago after selling for around $329. For now, it’s unknown how much the anniversary edition Ryzen 7 5800X3D will cost, but given the older manufacturing process, AMD will likely keep the price competitive.

It’s been four years since AMD released the 5800X3D, and it still stands toe-to-toe with newer CPUs thanks to its stacked 3D V-Cache. For context, it still delivers comparable performance to AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600X or Intel’s Core Ultra 5 245K in a wide range of modern games, all while drawing just 105 watts and working perfectly in budget-friendly motherboards.
