10 million cars sold: BYD shocks EV segment with 626-mile flagship for $37,000

Chinese automaker BYD has reached a production milestone that highlights the pressure it is putting on established manufacturers such as VW and Tesla. Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty Sales Division, confirmed on Weibo that the 10 millionth Dynasty vehicle has rolled off the production line in China. The range, which includes the Han, Tang, Song, Qin and Yuan, reached that figure in just under 13 years. Growth has accelerated sharply: According to recent market data, more than 1 million Dynasty vehicles were added in the first eight months of 2026 alone. For comparison, VW sold around 394,000 fully electric vehicles worldwide across all its model lines in the whole of 2023. The figures illustrate the scale and pace of BYD's growth relative to established automakers.
BYD chose its new Da Han, the D+ segment flagship of the Dynasty range, as the milestone vehicle. The electric sedan is 17.2 feet long and nearly 6.6 feet wide. It is aimed at the premium segment and is scheduled to launch in China on October 13, 2026, with preorders already underway. Its specifications suggest that BYD is targeting buyers who might otherwise choose a Mercedes, BMW or Audi.

The entry-level rear-wheel-drive model starts at around $37,100 and has a range of 626 miles under China's test cycle. It uses a 102.3 kWh second-generation Blade battery designed for safety and energy density. The top all-wheel-drive version costs just under $44,500, produces 764 hp and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds. Its 1,000-volt architecture and charging technology allow the battery to charge from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes at a compatible megawatt charger.
All Da Han models come standard with dual-chamber air suspension offering 3.9 inches of height adjustment, rear-wheel steering and a LiDAR-based driver assistance system. Other features include zero-gravity seats, Nappa leather and a 31-speaker sound system. Whether or when the Da Han will launch in Europe to compete with models such as the VW ID.7 and BMW i5 remains unclear. With 10 million Dynasty vehicles produced, BYD is now also targeting established Western automakers in the luxury segment.
