Xiaomi will soon be selling much more than phones and electronic devices in Europe. The company, which ‘recently’ started manufacturing electric vehicles, has completed an experimental car registration in Germany ahead of a 2027 launch on the continent.
Company president William Lu posted a photo of the SU7 Ultra spotting a German license plate on Weibo. He added that he test-drove the electric sedan in Munich, Germany.
The license plate bears the tag “M SU7088E,” which indicates the model name.
Lu had revealed earlier in the year that his company’s EV arm, Xiaomi EV, plans to export cars by 2027. He also stated he would embark on a personal tour of European countries to evaluate Chinese EV sales.
The expansion roadmap was confirmed months later by Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun. However, Jun said Xiaomi would focus on the Chinese market before venturing outside.
Xiaomi has ambitious plans to expand its EV business beyond China after a fairy tale entry into the e-mobility space. Its latest EV, the YU7 SUV, shook the automotive world by garnering over 200,000 reservations just minutes after its launch in the local market.
The SU7 has also performed beyond expectations, selling over 20,000 units per month. The car was launched in March 2024 and positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3. It is popular enough that customers have to endure a waiting period of up to 41 weeks.
Xiaomi operates a single factory with a 150,000-unit-per-year capacity in Beijing, with plans for expansion.
