Reviews for the Xiaomi 12S

Xiaomi 12S Smartphone Review
Source: OI Spice Tech News English
The Xiaomi 12S smartphone is a decent flagship phone that fulfills everything you expect from a flagship device. Moreover, the phone is currently only feasible in China, so if you want to purchase this handset you have to wait till the company release the global version. But if we have to recommend this phone, then considering Xiaomi’s brand reputation, it is not that bad either. Despite this, we would like to highlight that there are several other options present in the market. You can check out the Asus ROG Phone 6 which has immersive gaming-centric features and subtle performance to present as a decent alternative. On the other hand, the Realme GT 2 Pro still can be considered an all-rounder deal. Now, it’s time for you to decide which one you want.

Model:

The latest to join the Xiaomi line-up is none other than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12S. In terms of its design, there is no metal frame, glass back or the latest generation of Gorilla Glass but this should not come as a surprise due to its price range. While the sturdy plastic case of this device does not feel particularly high quality, it deserves attention due to its well-made design. In addition, the phone comes with an IP53 certification which simply indicates that the device is protected against dust and splashes of water. At a glance, this smartphone shares similar design as its Redmi Note 12 colleagues and thus hardly differs visually from the Pro models. However, it is worth noting that the screen bezel is marginally wider, which still results in a good display-to-surface ratio of around 85 percent.

As for its display, Redmi Note 12S has been incorporated with a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and runs at a smooth 120 Hz. It is also worth mentioning that the refresh rate can be reduced to 60 Hz in the display settings to conserve power. In addition, the display also supports HDR10 and HLG. Overall, for a smartphone in its price range, this device delivers above-average brightness. As far as its software is concerned, this model definitely has a slight drawback. While the Redmi Note 12 has been launched with Android 13, the Redmi Note 12S and the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G, which are actually higher in the Redmi hierarchy, only comes with Android 12. Apart from that, this smartphone comes with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. Furthermore, the latter can be expanded via a microSD card, which can be up to 1 TB in size and can also be formatted in the exFAT file format.

In terms of its performance, this phone is one of the first smartphones to use the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1. Being the successor to the Snapdragon 480+, this processor is said to run around 15 percent faster than its predecessor. In addition, Qualcomm speaks of up to 10 percent higher performance for the GPU. The performance of the Redmi Note 12S is enough to narrowly beat the Redmi Note 12, which has been equipped with the Snapdragon 685. However, the difference is not quite noticeable in practice though. Talking about its battery, this smartphone comes with a 5000 mAh battery. As for the camera, this model carries a 13 MP selfie camera which sits in a punch hole and takes satisfactory photos with decent sharpness and exposure in daylight. Apart from that, it can also record videos in Full HD resolution at 30 frames per second at most. On the back, the rear triple camera consists of a 48 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultra wide-angle camera and a 2 MP sensor for macro shots. In bright light, the main camera tends to take quite good pictures with lots of detail. Overall, it is a great phone to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the user.

Qualcomm Adreno 730: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 30% faster than the Adreno 660 in the Snapdragon 888 SoC. For Android it should be one of the fastest graphics cards in late 2021.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Furthermore, four energy saving cores are integrated that are based on the ARM Cortex-A510 architecture and clock at up to 1.8 GHz. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 6e modem, a Hexagon DSP (for AI acceleration) and a Spectra ISP. The integrated memory controller supports fast LPDDR5 memory with up to 3,200 MHz. 5G is now included in the chip with the Snapdragon X65 modem. Compared to the non plus version, the 8+ Gen 1 offers a 200 MHz higher clocked Prime Core and a 10% higher clocked GPU. Furthermore, it is now produced at TSMC and not Samsung.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

6.28":

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
