It's the XC70, but not as we knew it, perhaps. Volvo has slapped that name onto a new vehicle slated to fit into the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) category, as it can be plugged in as well as fueled up. The new car has been previewed alongside its new Volvo platform.

Volvo has introduced what might sound like a blast from the past in the form of the XC70 - although its new incarnation does not quite stretch to the classic station wagon silhouette one might expect on hearing that name.

Instead, it is clear that the 'new XC70' is an SUV much like any other - albeit with non-ICE motors to augment its range.

Then again, the brand asserts that the new hybrid vehicle can also go for up to 200 kilometers (~124 miles) on its batteries alone.

This plug-in version of the XC70 is also equipped with Volvo's latest Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform for EVs. Little else is known about the new EREV's specs at the time of writing.

The Volvo XC70 is currently projected to launch in 2026, but may be exclusive to the Chinese market to start off with at least.
