Toshiba Satellite X205 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The Toshiba Satellite X205 is a high-end multimedia notebook from Toshiba featuring the latest and greatest in mobile technology. It is based on the Intel Santa Rosa platform and has the Nvidia GeForce 8700M-GT DirectX 10 video card. There are two configurations of the X205 available at the time of writing this review – the X205-S9349 and the X205-S9359. We have the former and it retails for $1,999. The higher-end S9359 retails for $2,499 and ups the ante with a T7300 processor, Vista Ultimate 32-bit, a WSXGA+ resolution display, a 512MB dedicated video card, 320GB of hard drive space, and an external HDTV TV tuner. The Satellite X205 is suited for both home multimedia entertainment and gaming. At $1,999, I believe the S9349 is more than reasonably priced as it has the Nvidia 8700M-GT graphics card, 240GB of hard drive space, and more importantly an HD DVD-ROM drive. Other notebooks with similar specifications cannot compete with the X205 at this price point at the time of writing.

Robust home portable offers great gaming with beautiful-sounding audio and a stylish striped lid.
This big multimedia notebook is for on-the-go gamers and TV fans. The Toshiba Satellite X205-S9359 handles 3D shooters with aplomb, plus it comes bundled with an add-on TV tuner and remote control for watching shows. For work, productivity applications are also included in the laptop's $2400 (as of 10/9/07) price. Regardless of your pursuit, the big screen and twin hard drives make for very comfortable desktop computing. Just don't count on long battery life. The X205-S9359 is a preconfigured retail model distinguished by a swirly red and black "carmine flare" lid that for a gaming notebook is downright tasteful. A very similar-looking model, the X205-S9349, is $500 less but has only half the video memory and storage.

Don't let its looks deceive you. The Satellite X205-S9359 is one powerful gaming ring.
Toshiba's latest desktop replacement gaming rig doesn't look much like the hardcore gaming systems we're used to seeing. It has an attractive, if not demure, flared red finish that's more typical of a guitar than a computer. The hardware is definitely of the specialist variety; this $2,399 notebook features Nvidia's GeForce 8700M GT graphics card with 512MB of VRAM and 320GB of storage. That combination of features and price is enough to put the X205 on any gamer's short list.  Because the 17-inch system features a widescreen display (1680 x 1050 pixels and 720p native resolution), the chassis feels much smaller than that of comparable gaming systems, like the Asus G2S-A1, though the X205's actual footprint is only slightly smaller at 16 x 11 x 1 inches.

Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi3 Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
Overall, the effectiveness of SLI technology is hit or miss. While it has plenty of potential as seen in Quake Wars: Enemy Territory and 3DMark06, the difference simply does not add up on the whole. One-third of the games I tested did not show any gain from enabling SLI and from those that did, only one showed a performance increase matching what Nvidia claims is possible (2X). Other games showed at best a 60 to 70% improvement (which is still impressive). The point is, do not expect an SLI gaming setup to literally double framerates. As I stated at the beginning of the article, Toshiba sells two series of the X205 gaming notebook; one has a single 8700M-GT card and the other series, tested here, has dual 8600M-GTs. A single 8700M-GT is 30 to 40% faster than a single 8600M-GT on average.

The current flood of excellent gaming laptops (Dell's XPS M1730, HP/Voodoo's Envy, and Alienware's m9750) means that PC gamers have plenty of choices when it comes to picking a new mobile rig. To break through the clutter, Toshiba, not exactly the first name that comes to mind when you think of gaming, would have to offer something special. By putting dual SLI Nvidia GeForce 8600M GPUs in its standard 17-inch Satellite chassis for as little as $1,999, the company has done just that. Our slightly upgraded Satellite X205-SLi3 cost a little more at $2,499, but that's still a few hundred dollars less than the cheapest SLI configurations from Alienware or Dell (although they start with the higher-end Nvidia 8700).

Toshiba's Satellite X205 is clearly designed towards the PC gamer and it shows in its features. The dual graphics card setup does boost performance over many single graphics processor notebookgs but it still falls behind other gaming notebooks for using middle group graphics cores. For a gamer, the system performs well but those looking for a performance based desktop have other faster alterantives for the same price if they don't need the graphics.

At $2,199, the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 offers decent performance, but its scores were so close to the much more affordable Gateway P-6831FX that we’re hard-pressed to recommend it. For $850 less you get comparable gaming scores (better on some tests, worse on others), longer battery life, and a ready-to-play configuration—without updates, downloads, hotfixes, and setting tweaks. The biggest reasons to get this system versus the Gateway are its higher-resolution display and larger hard drive (320GB versus 250GB), which isn’t enough justification in our book.

We've always appreciated the inexpensive SLI options offered by Toshiba's gaming-oriented X205 series, but it's hard to recommend the X205-SLi4 when other vendors offer better frame rates for almost $1,000 less.

Toshiba doesn't take it slow when it comes to updating the Satellite brand. Ever since the company launched its first gaming laptop—the Satellite P105-S921—in early 2006, the torrential downpour of beastly laptops equipped with powerful graphics cards hasn't ceased. The Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi4 may not have performance bragging rights, but the reasonable price tag should bring new gaming talent out of the woodwork.

Toshiba Satellite X205 Satellite broke a lot of ground when it was first introduced, but it has failed to really keep up with the times. It has undergone a number of revisions, but the X205-SLi5 just doesn't match up well enough with similarly priced systems. While the dual GeForce 8600M make gaming smooth, there are better options available now for less.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT is a DirectX 10 capable video card with 32 Stream Precessors like the 8600M GT, but the core-, shader- and memory clock is higher. Therefore the performance is somewhat above the 8600M GT.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 GT GPU for laptops. Depending on the used graphic memory and the clock speed,  the performance is between the 7600 GT and 7900 GS video card.

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 / 7700 for laptops and technically a higher clocked 8400M GT. The performance is slightly above the 7600 / 7700 and, therefore, it can represent DirectX9 games fluently. For DirectX 10 effects, the power of the card is not sufficient.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T7300: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.

T7500:

The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

T7250: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.

T8100: Former mid-range Core 2 Duo based on the Penryn core that features FSB800 and VT-x virtualization functions.

T8300: The Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 was at the time of announcement a fast dual-core CPU for laptops with 3 MB level 2 cache.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.9 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

4.6 kg:

A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.

67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
