The Heretic + Hexen remaster bundle just launched on Steam with refreshed 4K visuals, new campaigns, cross-platform multiplayer, and full mod support. It is free for original owners and has a number of modern features while sticking to its core dark fantasy formula.
During QuakeCon 2025, id Software and Nightdive Studios surprised fans by releasing Heretic + Hexen, a fully remastered bundle of two cult-favorite fantasy shooters. The game is now available on Steam, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and Game Pass platforms.
These games trace back to the mid-1990s - Heretic debuted in 1994, featured vertical aiming, inventory, and darker fantasy lore within the Doom engine, followed by Hexen in 1995 with class-based characters and hub-style levels.
While this remaster bundle does preserve the charm of the originals, it also adds to in more than one way. It includes upgraded visuals (4K, 120 fps), upgraded textures, modern accessibility tools, an updated soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult (who worked on the Doom Eternalsoundtrack as well), controller support, quick-save, balance toggle, mod browser, and the "Raven Vault" with art assets. Online and local multiplayer - up to 16 players - are also supported.

The package gathers all classic content into a single package - both Heretic episodes and Hexen’s base game plus Deathkings of the Dark Citadel - alongside two brand-new campaigns: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur, which brings the total map count to 117.
While outlet reviews of this game are still somewhat scarce, Heretic + Hexen has scored a "Very Positive" rating on Steam so far (from over 200 reviews). The undeniably lasting appeal of these style of games and their active modding community are promising signs that this remaster could be both a tribute and a platform for a new experience. It's priced at $14.99. The game trailer is pretty neat, and is linked below. The Steam store page for the game is viewable here.
