Doom Eternal Notebook and Desktop Benchmarks

Continuous fire. Doom Eternal is even more colorful and crazier than its already action-packed predecessor. Read our benchmark test and find out which graphics card you need for smooth gameplay.
Doom Eternal

Technology

Doom Eternal is the first game to run on id Software's in-house id Tech 7. Similar to the predecessor from 2016, which was still based on the id Tech 6, Doom Eternal scores with a nice look. In addition to the texture quality, the level of detail is usually at a good level. The effects are beyond any doubt anyway. If several opponents are on the screen, the first-person shooter produces a real spectacle. We will analyze which graphics cards will break a sweat.

Our benchmarks were carried out with the Steam version, which is slightly more expensive than the version for the Bethesda Games Launcher, but without the disadvantages of the latter platform (a Bethesda account is required in both cases). The download size is around 42 GB, which is decent for a game from 2020. Other first-person shooters with comparable graphics quality such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare easily break the 100 GB mark.

While the game takes some time to start, the in-game loading times are surprisingly short (at least with an SSD). Switching between menus is also quick. Speaking of menus: The graphics settings of Doom Eternal are quite extensive. If you scroll through the list, you will not only find various display options (resolution, vertical synchronization, HDR etc.), several video settings (field of view, motion blur, gamma, ...) and a mode for color-blind people, but also dozens of advanced settings, all of which can be adjusted by Overall Quality.

But be careful: depending on the size of the video memory, certain quality levels are blocked (especially with regard to the textures). For a GPU with 4 GB VRAM in Full HD, you can only select the high preset at most. With 2 GB VRAM, the restrictions are even greater (only low in full HD), which seems somewhat incomprehensible to us. Yes, as you can see from the integrated display, Doom Eternal has a very high VRAM consumption (approx. 5 GB @ FHD / Ultra), but the 2016 Doom looked similarly well with less system hunger. Due to the restrictive VRAM policy, we do not use the Nightmare and Ultra Nightmare presets in our benchmarks, as otherwise some GPUs would lack even more results.

There are pluses for the fact that setting changes do not require a restart. However, one should also mention that the presets often differ little visually and in terms of performance. Caution: Doom Eternal refuses to start with outdated GPU drivers. If for some reason a new driver cannot be installed on a device (as with our GTX-1650 notebook), gamers are stuck.

Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal is at its best during gameplay. Hardly any first-person shooter creates such a good "flow" when it comes to movement speed, weapon handling, feedback and general movement (although the character is sometimes stuck briefly). However, in our opinion, id Software is exaggerating with the additional features. Without all the improvements or activations (e.g. skill menus etc.) Doom Eternal would work just as well. The additional features do not necessarily increase the fun, but take out speed unnecessarily and distract from the actual gameplay.

Benchmarks

For our benchmarks we use a passage from the first mission (Hell on Earth), which can be reached after about 5 minutes of play. Due to the outside area, the sequence is quite demanding, but does not yet represent a worst-case scenario. We run a defined distance for almost 20 seconds and record the frame rate with the OCAT tool. Because Doom Eternal uses the Vulkan API instead of OpenGL (you could still choose in the predecessor), the classic Fraps doesn't work. By the way, the frame rate can be displayed using a switch in the graphics menu (Performance Metrics).

Results

FHD (1920 x 1080)

Apart from the VRAM requirement, Doom Eternal is relatively undemanding when it comes to the power of the graphics card. 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and the preset Medium run smoothly from a middle-class representative like the GeForce GTX 1650. When using the High or Ultra preset, at least a GeForce GTX 1060 should be under the hood for more than 60 FPS.

QHD (2560 x 1440)

High-end models are only necessary beyond Full HD, although a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is already sufficient for a mixture of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and ultra settings.

UHD (3840 x 2160)

Owners of 4K monitors with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels can not avoid a particularly expensive graphics card on the level of the GeForce RTX 2070 or RTX 2080.

Since gaming tests are very time-consuming and are often hampered by installation or activation limits, we can only provide you with a part of the benchmarks by the time of publication of this article. Benchmark scores with additional graphics cards will be submitted in the coming days and weeks.

Legend
5Stutters – This game is very likely to stutter and have poor frame rates. Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, average frame rates are expected to fall below 25fps
May Stutter – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, stutters and poor frame rates are expected.
30Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 25fps
40Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 35fps
60Fluent – Based on all known benchmarks using the specified graphical settings, this game should run at or above 58fps
May Run Fluently – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game. Based on interpolated information from surrounding graphics cards of similar performance levels, fluent frame rates are expected.
?Uncertain – This graphics card experienced unexpected performance issues during testing for this game. A slower card may be able to achieve better and more consistent frame rates than this particular GPU running the same benchmark scene.
Uncertain – This graphics card has not been explicitly tested on this game and no reliable interpolation can be made based on the performances of surrounding cards of the same class or family.
The value in the fields displays the average frame rate of all values in the database. Move your cursor over the value to see individual results.
