Samsung Galaxy A10

With the introduction of the latest generation of the Samsung Galaxy A series, Samsung has officially announced that it is replacing the J series with the A series. This means that the A series now offers phones from the low range, mid-range and higher mid-range that are almost as good as the S series. With this announcement, it has also released a few new devices and one of them is the Galaxy A10. The A10 essentially replaces the low-end phone under the J series from last year. For a start, it comes with a full screen design with relatively small bezels. It is also thin and light weight. With the reduced bezels and the teardrop notch like the rest of the bigger A series, Samsung has managed to include a 6.2-inch display. Unlike its bigger siblings, the display is a standard IPS LCD panel with a 720 x 1,520 pixels giving it a pixel density of 271 PPI. The screen is rather bright and sharp compared to the others in this price range. It is shipped with an Exynos 7884 Octa processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The phone has a dedicated micro SD slot for storage expansion. In terms of photography, it has a 13 MP camera on the rear and a 5 MP selfie camera. Nothing much can be expected from this camera as the photo quality is on the lower side. However, the rear one can produce some useable photos for regular social media posting. The Samsung Galaxy A10 comes with the industries latest Bluetooth 5.0 and it includes the head phone jack. Inside, there is a 3,400 mAh battery to provide decent screen-on-time but is rechargeable via the older micro USB port. It comes in blue, black and red color. The Samsung Galaxy A 10 may not sound compelling enough but given its price point, it is one hell of a deal. It has a very good screen, decent performance and relatively good camera. In many ways, the A10 is a budget Chinese phone killer. It provides a better Android smartphone experience compared to what the cheaper phones from Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo can provide. These phones may be slightly cheaper but they usually have bigger drawbacks in more than one area and the screens give away their cheaper price. User reviews have put the screen in the A10 to be better than some of the mid-range phones in the market such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. Unless a person’s budget is below the retail price, we can’t think of a reason to not choose this phone compared to the rest. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

ARM Mali-G71 MP2: Integrated GPU that can be found e.g. in the Mediatek Helio P23 SoC with 700 or 770 MHz clock speed. Supports OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, DirectX 11 FL11_1 and RenderScript.

ARM Mali-G52 MP2: Integrated mid range graphics card with 2 clusters. ARM states that the G52 series is 30% faster and 15% more efficient compared to the G51 series on the same process node.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Imagination PowerVR GE8320: Integrated graphics card for mid-range ARM SoCs.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Samsung Exynos:

Exynos 7884B: Exynos 7 Series SoC that includes two big Cortex-A73 cores clocked at up to 1.6 GHz and six power efficient Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.35 GHz. The integrated LTE modem supports 150 MBit/s Download and 50 MBit/s Upload. Wifi 4 (802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth 5.0 are also integrated.

Mediatek Helio 20:

Helio P22 MT6762: ARM based octa core SoC (8x ARM Cortex-A53) clocked at up to 2 GHz. The chip also includes a Cat.7 LTE modem (300 Mbps download).

Mediatek :

Dimensity 700: The Dimensity 700 is a fast mid-range SoC with an integrated 5G modem. It includes two fast ARM Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.2 GHz and six power efficient Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2 GHz.

Dimensity 6100+: The Dimensity 6100 Plus is a lower mid-range SoC with an integrated 5G modem. It includes two fast ARM Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.2 GHz and six power efficient Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2 GHz. The specifications are similar to the old Dimensity 700 SoC and nearly identical to the 6020.

Mediatek Mediatek:

Helio G80: ARM based octa-core SoC with 2x big ARM Cortex-A75 cores at up to 2 GHz and 6x small and power efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores at up to 1.8 GHz. Integrates a Cat-7 (DL) / Cat-13 (UL) LTE Modem (4G), ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU and a ARM Mali G52 MC2 with up to 950 MHz.

Helio G99: ARM based octa-core SoC with 2x big ARM Cortex-A76 cores and 6x small and power efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores. All clocked up to 2.2 GHz. Integrates a Cat-13 LTE Modem (4G) and a ARM Mali-G57 MP2 graphics card. Compared to the older Helio G96, the G99 is manufactured in the more recent 6nm process and clocks higher.
