Samsung ATIV 870Z5E-X03DE
Samsung is currently one of the world’s leading brands in smart phone technology, but they are not quite that successful in the notebooks world. One of their latest offspring, the Samsung ATIV 870Z5E-X03DE, tries to change this. It is a premium device with great build quality and top of the line hardware. At first glance, the beautiful brushed aluminum case looks high-end. The laptop does not disappoint when opened. Its large, spacious keyboard and touchpad that are comfortable to use. The 15.6 inch fullHD touch screen is impressive.
The performance of this laptop is top of the line. Plenty of processor performance and a great graphics card ensure that even hardcore gamers maximizing the settings in demanding games will not encounter problems. This laptop achieve a battery life of above 7 hours on light use. A new feature, which Samsung smart phone users will love, is the SideSync app. Once the app is also installed on a smart phone, users can navigate phones from laptops and cut and paste between laptop and smart phone. Audio capability is of the loud on-board speakers is above average with full bass and great, balanced sound. The weight of the laptop is 2.2 kg which is a little on the heavy side, yet still easily portable. The price may seem high, but the beautiful build quality, great performance and battery life are what make the Samsung ATIV 870Z5E-X03DE worth every penny, and a great, balanced machine.

We'd rather have an optical drive instead of a touchscreen but this is hardly uncommon. Nevertheless, the Samsung Ativ Book 8 is a powerhouse Windows 8 laptop. We like the smart design and usability, but you're paying a lot of money for a 2012-spec laptop, when 2013 processors have changed the game. While processing performance is good, it's seriously missing out on the battery life we're seeing from newer Haswell chips.

As we noted with the Samsung ATIV Book 6, the ATIV Book 8 offers a premium design, strong audio, excellent all-around performance, and a host of apps, such as SideSync, that will be useful for Samsung smartphone owners. Although it costs $70 more, the $1,269 Book 8 also lasts more than two hours longer on a charge than the Book 6.

The Samsung ATIV Book 8 is the company’s premium effort in the popular 15.6-inch category, and it’s a fine laptop. In every category, from the display to build quality to performance, this laptop is at or near the top of its class. We were even surprised to find that the battery not only exceeds what is typical for a large laptop but also actually beats the results we’ve recorded from many 13.3-inch Ultrabooks.

Touch update. Same chassis and hardware, different name. Samsung adds a touchscreen to a Chronos 7 series model and renames the notebook in the process. Like the predecessor, the ATIV Book 8 Touch still ships with a potent Core i7 processor and a dedicated Radeon GPU. How the notebook performs and compares to its competitors are the subjects of this review.

Austerity package. Samsung introduces its new and affordable ATIV Book 8 featuring the latest Haswell CPU and an Nvidia graphics card. Instead of a glossy touchscreen, Samsung now relies on a matte and bright display. Are those the only differences? We took a closer look.

Samsung: Samsung Group is the largest South Korean conglomerate and was founded in 1938. Samsung Group employed 489,000 people in 2014 and is one of the world's largest companies in terms of revenue and market strength. The name Samsung means "Three Stars" in Korean and represents the three sons of the company's founder. The company was founded in 1938 as a grocery store. With its subsidiary Samsung Electronics, founded in 1969, Samsung took up the production of electrotechnical items, focusing on consumer electronics and household appliances at an early stage. Other branches in which the large corporation is active include mechanical engineering, automobiles (Hyundai), insurance, wholesale, real estate and leisure. Samsung manufactures a wide range of electronic products, including smartphones, televisions, home appliances and semiconductors. The company's Galaxy line of smartphones is one of the most popular in the world. Samsung is also a major player in the semiconductor industry, making memory chips and processors for many other electronics manufacturers.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Radeon HD 8870M: Upper middle-class GPU based on the same chip as its Radeon HD 7870M predecessor.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3635QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1200 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
4700HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
