A new rumor about the Navi 33 GPU from AMD claims that the next-gen entry-level graphics processor will be able to match, and even outperform, the flagship Navi 21 chip from the Radeon RX 6000 series. In addition, the Radeon RX 7000 series will likely require much lower power draws than the GeForce RTX 40 lineup for high-performance usage.

Once again, leaker Greymon55 has been on the next-gen GPU rumor trail, and this time has posted a clue about the future output coming from AMD. While Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 series is already looking both formidable and astonishingly power-hungry, it appears the Radeon RX 7000 series will be no slouch either and hopefully at a much more bearable power cost.

The tipster stated that the entry-level Navi 33 GPU, which could appear in a graphics card SKU such as the Radeon RX 7700 XT if AMD retains the familiar naming scheme, is “theoretically possible to be higher than 6900 XT”. This performance rumor is based on FP32 testing, or how many calculations the graphics chip can make per second. The source states that the RX 6900 XT can manage a very impressive 22.9 TFLOPS when (over?) clocked at 2.80 GHz. (The regular boost clock for the RX 6900 XT is 2.25 GHz.)

In essence, this means there can be some expectation that Navi 33 could produce similar performance levels as Navi 21, or that the current-generation flagship graphics processor will be outclassed by the next-generation entry-level model. The same source has actually touched upon this "Navi 33 is greater than RX 6900 XT" theme before, and this also bodes well for the performance capabilities of Navi 32 and Navi 31, which will apparently use a multi-chip module (MCM) design that allows more space for more cores.

Greymon55 also mentions that “for power consumption, 220-250 W is what I think is ideal”. The Radeon RX 6900 XT has a typical board power (TBP) of 300 W while the Navi 22-based RX 6700 XT relies on 230 W. So not only is it suggested that Navi 33 will outperform Navi 21, it also seems to be hinted that it will reach that high performance at Navi 22 power levels. If any of this ends up being accurate, then AMD will certainly put up a strong fight against Nvidia when it comes to the upcoming RX 7000 vs. GeForce RTX 40 showdown.
