The Snapdragon 782G is the latest mobile processor to be announced from Qualcomm, although sharp-eyed tech fans will be strongly reminded of some pre-existing platforms on reading its main specs. Then again, the "new" SoC may still bring the best it can to the first smartphone to launch with it, thanks to up-to-date features such as Snapdragon Sound, Bluetooth 5.2 and support for up to 200MP camera sensors.

Qualcomm has unexpectedly dropped an SoC designed for new mid-range smartphones; then again, many of its core specs seem to have been around since 2021. With its Snapdragon X53 5G-capable modem, FastConnect 6700 system for Wi-Fi up to 6E/Bluetooth 5.2 and 6nm process nature, it is a pretty overt refresh of older 7-series CPUs...which may explain why it lacks the new branding.

Even Qualcomm intimates that the 782G may have been commissioned to make the most of the remaining Snapdragon 778G and 778G+ stock. To this end, it is compatible with image sensors of up to 200MP, which it might use to shoot HDR10+ video in 1 billion+ color.

The 782G also has the same Spectra ISP, Qualcomm AI Engine, Snapdragon Elite Gaming and up-to-date Snapdragon Sound audio suite as the 778G series. However, its fastest Kryo 670 Prime Cortex-A78 core has been upgraded from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz in the 782G.

Qualcomm also claims to have boosted image detail capture at 200MP, and to have improved GPU performance by up to 10%, compared to the 778G line, in this refreshed SoC. The timing of its launch may be propitious, as the inaugural Snapdragon 782G smartphone is projected to launch tomorrow (November 23, 2022).
