The move comes after Nintendo removed its Nintendo Gold Points rewards program earlier this year.

Nintendo announced that the company is discontinuing its Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers service at the start of 2026. According to Nintendo, the service will end on January 30, 2026, after which, users will be barred from purchasing the vouchers.

Nintendo announced the discontinuation of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers on their support page:

“As of 11:59 PM Pacific Time January 30, 2026, it will no longer be possible to purchase Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers.”

Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers allowed users to pick up two vouchers for $99.99, which could then be redeemed for first-party Switch titles. These vouchers allowed owners to save a chunk of money as compared to individually buying said games, digitally or physically. For example, users could purchase two $60 games, saving $20.

Nintendo confirms that unused vouchers will expire after 12 months, but there’s no word on whether the company plans on introducing an alternative service featuring Switch 2 games. In Nintendo’s statement:

“Game vouchers remain valid for 12 months from purchase. For example, if a set of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers is purchased on January 30, 2026, each Nintendo Game Voucher remains valid until January 30, 2027.”

Nintendo introduced My Nintendo Gold Points when the original Switch launched back in 2017. Every cent spent on a digital purchase would earn users one point, allowing players to exchange Gold Points for discounts on Nintendo titles.

On March 24, 2025, Nintendo ended the ability to earn My Nintendo Gold Points for digital purchases via the eShop and download codes. Players can still earn Gold Points within one year of a physical title’s release date. Players who still own Gold Points can exchange them for discounts until March 24, 2026.

This change comes at a time when gaming is becoming more and more expensive. Nintendo might introduce a new discount program. On the other hand, Nintendo is also known to avoid offering discounts on its first-party titles even as it raised prices for certain titles to the $80 mark, setting a new industry precedent.
