Nexomon: Extinction immerses players in a fantasy world where fierce Nexomon – powerful, beast-like creatures – roam freely and pose a threat to the last bastions of humanity. You play as a young recruit of the Tamer's Guild, setting out on a quest to restore balance. The story spans diverse regions, cities and biomes, all brought to life by quirky characters, unexpected plot twists and a refreshingly self-aware tone. Despite the looming danger, the game doesn't take itself too seriously, instead winning players over with its witty humor and playful nods to genre tropes.
When it comes to gameplay, Nexomon: Extinction draws clear inspiration from classic monster-catching RPGs like Pokémon. The core loop revolves around capturing, training and evolving over 380 Nexomon, each belonging to different rarity tiers and elemental types. Battles are turn-based, with players sending their Nexomon into combat rather than fighting directly. Each creature comes with unique strengths, weaknesses and abilities, while stamina management adds an extra layer of strategy – every move consumes energy, so careful planning is key to gaining the upper hand in battle.
Beyond its main story, Nexomon: Extinction features a surprisingly open world filled with varied biomes. Many areas are accessible early on, encouraging open-ended exploration. Side quests, hidden treasures and rare Nexomon are scattered throughout the map, offering plenty of reasons to stray from the beaten path. Notable features include a world map with fast travel points, dynamic weather, a scaling level system for wild Nexomon and several quality-of-life options like autosave and an optional EXP splitter. Visually, the game charms with its detailed 2D art style, showcasing hand-drawn characters and environments crafted with care.
Reviews: Exciting and challenging, but without much innovation
In Mobi.gg's German review, Nexomon: Extinction is praised for its witty and well-crafted dialogue, which stands out for its more mature tone and frequent fourth-wall breaks. The roughly 30-hour story is described as engaging and well-paced. Reviewers also highlighted the dynamic level system, which keeps battles challenging – even during routine training. However, while the game introduces some refinements, its core gameplay remains heavily rooted in the Pokémon formula and offers few genuine innovations to the genre.
It's worth noting that Mobi.gg reviewed the mobile version of Nexomon: Extinction for Android and iOS, where the controls were sometimes described as imprecise and cumbersome. However, the experience is expected to be smoother on PC, where the game has been very well received by players – earning a 92% positive rating from around 2,800 reviews on Steam. On Metacritic, the user score for the PC version stands at a solid 7.6.
