Lenovo has not previously designed a larger desktop replacement notebook system primarily because of their focus on businesses. With consumer demand now for notebooks being greater than desktops and particularly for larger desktop replacement styles, Lenovo finally decided to put together a consumer oriented 17-inch notebook with the IdeaPad Y710 and it is a very strong first product.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Y510 is probably one of the best thin and light notebook systems when you look at the overall features it provides and its cost. Items such as 4GB of RAM, Bluetooth and dedicted graphics make this a very good laptop for those looking at some more than a budget system.

When is a ThinkPad not a ThinkPad? Don't twist your brain too hard around this riddle. It's when Lenovo, a corporate staple, makes a play for the casual laptop buyer, dressing up its solid, well-built systems with some new consumer-friendly features and naming it the 15-inch IdeaPad Y510. Lenovo's entry into the consumer laptop market with the 15-inch IdeaPad Y510 provides ThinkPad-like quality but the design still comes off as a little buttoned-up.

The IdeaPad Y510 is a solid first notebook for Lenovo’s new consumer line. The robust sound system and convenient facial recognition software help this budget machine stand out from the pack, even if the orange accents won’t appeal to everyone. The Dell Inspiron 1525 offers more performance for your buck, but the IdeaPad Y510’s unique feature set makes it one of the better 15.4-inch notebooks you can get for under a grand.

The ThinkPad brand is an iconic image in the corporate world, but Lenovo has been absent from the U.S. consumer laptop market—until now. The company's recently launched the IdeaPad line as its first set of non-business models to debut on these shores. Lenovo's first consumer laptop in the United States has excellent design appeal, but it's available only through limited retail channels.

The name ThinkPad has been synonymous with business for years and remains one of the single most popular notebook brands for corporate road warriors. But what about average consumers? This is where Lenovo's all new IdeaPad line of notebooks comes to the rescue. The 15-inch IdeaPad Y510 offers innovative design, solid technical specs and impressive built-in speakers that make other laptops look like cheap toys. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 (starting at $814.99 MSRP) is available with a range of Core 2 Duo processors (from the Intel T2330 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo up to the T8100 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo). There is only one 15.4" screen offering, a 1280x800 WXGA glossy display.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 isn't exactly made for kids, but it sure can kick out the tunes. You can tell it was designed to be a sleek all-purpose laptop that knows how to get down to business and play around a little without costing a fortune (our review unit was $829 as of 2/26/09). Though the Y530 can't run modern games at a screaming pace, it still packs a decent amount of power for its sub-$1000 price tag. With the Lenovo IdeaPad Y530, "You get what you pay for" isn't a bad thing. The Y530 is a good laptop built for anyone who needs to work and to sneak in a little play time on the side. And, for under a thousand bucks, it is a solid counterpoint to Gateway's MC7803u series.

In Futuremark's PCMark Vantage test suite, the Lenovo Y530 performed quite well in comparison to the more powerful reference systems. In the CPU tests, with its 2.0GHz CPU, the Y530 fell in line just below the slightly faster 2.1GHz processors. The Y530 had its poorest showings in the memories and gaming tests. However, it held its own by shadowing the front runners in the Hard Disk Drive Test, Communications Test, Music Test, and TV and Movies Test. The Hitachi drive in the Lenovo Y530 proved to be a powerful addition for a 5,400 RPM drive and was surely a factor in the strong test results. The Y530's 15.4" screen, with its native resolution of 1280x800, was bright, and sharp, with good color reproduction and a quick response time.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 has a durable chassis and great sounding sound system, but could be improved in the graphics department. Limited to the NVIDIA 9300M dedicated graphics card which can be found in some netbooks, the Y530 doesn’t perform that well in games compared to other competing notebooks. For consumers the main use of the dedicated graphics would be for HD video decoding and digital audio out over HDMI for watching movies on your home television. For movies on the go the Y530 has a good surround sound system, which is a good step above what we usually see on most notebooks.

As a sub-$1,000 entertainment notebook, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 is a serious contender. The integrated Dolby sound system and subwoofer set it apart from the pack, and the Y530 offers significantly better performance than its predecessor. For the price, we prefer the Gateway MC Series. It’s not as portable, but it offers a bigger 16-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a more attractive design for $999. The IdeaPad Y530 has some amazing features to offer consumers in a budget laptop systems. It uses the Intel GM45 chipset that gives it some amazing features one wouldn't expect in a low cost PC such as speedy DDR3 memory, draft-n wireless support and newer integrated graphics. This would all be great if Lenovo didn't use an older 32-bit Intel Pentium Dual Core processor that limits the system to 32-bit software. If users can accept this slower processor, they do end up with a very feature packed laptop for the money.

One of the first things you notice about the Lenovo Ideapad Y650 is its screen lid. The cover is made of black embossed rubber, smooth and very sturdy. Inside it's all white gloss on the keyboard, palmrest and touchpad, while the 16in widescreen display (1366x768 resolution) is adorned by a black bezel. The Lenovo Ideapad Y650 is not for budget-conscious customers. But with its better-than-average onboard sound, very good all around performance, and an equally noteworthy feature set, we think it does enough to justify its high price tag.

ThinkPad fans should be happy to see that Lenovo is making a run at the consumer notebook market. The Lenovo Y650 is a strong contender amongst HP, Dell and Sony notebooks. It has a display that rivals Sony's high-end displays, Dolby audio with JBL hardware that can compete with HP's Altec Lansing setup and good performance for most productivity, multimedia and gaming applications. The notebook has a thin, sleek design and it has a good number of ports including an HDMI out port. The price is competitive at $1,149 - $1,249 and should be on the short list for those who are looking for a mid-sized notebook that can handle multimedia and moderate gaming. The battery life means this isn't a notebook for frequent travelers and those who are away from power for long periods of time.

Overall the IdeaPad is a well designed laptop that can act as both a desktop replacement and a capable entertainment notebook. There are some small minor faults, like a shaky display and only two USB slots, but generally it’s quite solid. Buyers will have to like the design enough to spend the extra cash for the Y650 over something from Gateway or HP (like the HDX16) but for that money they will get a slick and attractive computer. It would be great to see options for Blu-ray, a higher resolution display, and maybe even increased graphics power, but most consumers will be quite happy with the available builds.

The Lenovo Y650 is hard to recommend wholeheartedly. While the Y650 performs most day-to-day tasks extremely well and handles virtually any video you can throw at it, the low-display resolution makes this system hard to take seriously as a good media laptop. In the midst of a new crop of $1000-to-$1300, thin-body, large-screen laptops, including the Samsung R610, the Y650 offers some great general performance, and you won't need to schedule regular appointments with a chiropractor if you're going to be carrying it with you often. If you are hunting for a stylish, thin laptop with a powerful processor, and you can look past the low resolution, you could do a lot worse. And you'll be hard-pressed to find a better-sounding laptop in this class.

Of all the 16-inch media centers—laptops with 16-inch widescreens—the Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 ($1,299 direct) is easily the least burdensome on your back. It's an alternative for those who don't want to spend the money or make the switch to an Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics) but salivate over its lightness. The Y650 is designed with mobility in mind when others (ahem, other Windows laptops) with similar screens are at least a pound heavier. Yet it can also fill the void left by an old desktop. Part for part, though, the Y650 is a bit overpriced; there are better values out there. Then again, you can always wait around until there's a good Lenovo sale. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 is the lightest 16-inch media center around, but its somewhat high price tag isn't justified by its parts.

Formerly known for the iconic, if boxy, ThinkPads (which the company still does well: see our review of the T400s), Lenovo has also begun branching into more stylish consumer products, loosening up its slightly uptight design aesthetics along the way. None of the value-priced systems we’ve reviewed provide the design, features, portability, and strong battery life of the Lenovo Ideapad Y450. At $619, it’s a great notebook for students, families, or anyone on a budget who needs a highly portable computer with plenty of features. It is incorporated in Hong Kong. Lenovo was formed in 1984 as a spin-off of the Chinese Academy of Sciences new technology unit. The company initially began as a reseller, distributor and later CM for foreign brands, including IBM, entering the Chinese market. In 1990, Lenovo started to manufacture its own PCs and by 1997 became the market leader in China. In 2004, Lenovo bought IBM’s PC business for $1.25billion. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings. Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600: This is a DirectX 10 graphic card from ATI and direct competitor to the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphic card for laptops and performs in games much better than the Nvidia card.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: The Hd 3650 is a middle class graphics card (in 2008) and compareable to an 8600M GT GPU from Nvidia. It is fabricated in 55nm process and due to Avivo video engine the graphic card can support the processor with several video operations (HD video too).
Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image processing, and video editing tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.
Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
NVIDIA GeForce G 105M: Higher clocked 9300M GS and therefore a bit faster. Still manufactured in 65nm. Supports Hybrid-SLI with HybridPower and GeForceBoost (in conjunction with the right Nvidia chipset).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M:
The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
Intel Core 2 Extreme: The fastest Core 2 Duo variants of Intel are called Core 2 Extreme. Technically, these processors are based on a Merom/Penryn (X9000) core like all other Core 2 Duo processors, too.
14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
15.4: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. Nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
16.0: 16 inch display-variants exist since 2008 and partially got the market share of 15 inch notebooks. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
17.0: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
17.1: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.2 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 13 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
4 kg:
This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.
75.79%: This rating is not convincing. It must be considered, that there exist hardly any laptops, which receive a rating below 60%. This notebook is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
