There's no shortage of big-screen laptops these days. With the advent of the 16:9 aspect ratio, a screen format that widens the horizontal view while narrowing it from top to bottom, laptop screen sizes are filling in the gaps left by the current 16:10 formats. The HP Pavilion dv7t (2043CL) ($1,000 street) is a fantastic yet affordable big-screen media center, and instead of a traditional 17-inch (16:10) widescreen, it has a wider 17.3-inch (16:9) one. Overall, the multimedia experience will leave you starry-eyed, and this configuration is available for under $1,000 at your local Costco or online at www.costco.com. The HP Pavilion dv7t (2043CL)'s big screen and terrific gaming performance can be yours for just a grand.

If you can overlook those little problems, the dv7t is a handsome, fast unit. For our review it was nicely configured with a 400GB hard drive, a Blu-ray drive, and Windows Vista Home Premium. And if you're looking to replace a desktop, it's a better candidate than most other big notebooks because of its proprietary left-side connection for HP's xb3000 expansion base. Though the base is an expensive add-on, it incorporates a screen stand, a third hard-drive bay, far better speakers, and a wireless keyboard and mouse for a complete desktop experience. Forget the peripherals right now, though. Without the docking station, the dv7t slightly stumbles as an end-all, be-all entertainment unit. If you're looking for the whole package, consider Toshiba's Qosmio line of massive desktop replacement PCs. They're hardly portable, but the Qosmios (or is that Qosmii for plural?) have consistently incorporated terrific audio into their designs.

HP's Pavilion dv7-6185us is a serious alternative to the Envy series for those wanting high performance but not necessarily using it for gaming. The Intel Core i7 quad core processor and 6GB of memory allow it to handle even tough tasks such as desktop video. Storage is superb with a large hard drive, Blu-ray compatible drive and two USB 3.0 ports for expansion. HP has even moved back to a traditional trackpad from the poorly received unified version.

Granted, the HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx doesn't measure up to its competition in terms of productivity and multimedia performance. But it offers the best graphics bang for your buck in this price range, and the Blu-ray drive is icing on the cake. If you're looking for an affordable desktop replacement with some graphics chops and can live with mediocre processing power, put the dv6-6135dx at the top of your list. If you require more speed and wireless options such as WiDi, WiMAX, and Bluetooth, stick with the Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066A9U.

Buyers looking at the HP Pavilion dv7-6135dx may be put off by some of the things that are missing, like a Blu-ray drive or a quad-core processor, but the price tag is still hard to pass up. If you want a desktop replacement laptop that meets all for your day-to-day needs without costing a bundle, the HP Pavilion dv7-6135dx should definitely be on your shopping list.

While the price tag is inviting – and we’ve seen deals offering the dv7 for even fewer pounds than the £700 listed here – this HP is considerably bigger and slower than most modern laptops. Other components are more up-to-date, and build quality is not bad. If you're looking for a low-budget 17in desktop replacement with some entertainment features and plenty of storage, this may be the laptop for you.

The HP Pavilion dv7 has a huge screen, and while power users will crave more pixels, there’s not much you can’t do with 1600 x 900. Its desktop-replacement credentials continue with the full-size keyboard and numpad, and although this isn’t exactly the best-looking machine out there, its ergonomics are perfectly fine for daily desk work, if you don't mind the off-centre trackpad. Those with high-end aspirations should be mindful of the relative lack of computational poke, yet at under £600, there’s a lot to like here.

The HP Pavilion dv7-6101sa's aluminium shell makes it both sturdy and attractive. With a 17.3-inch screen and Beats by Dr Dre speakers, this laptop is also well suited to movie playback. But, at around £560, is its performance any cop? The HP Pavilion dv7-6101sa looks swanky, with its aluminium shell and 17.3-inch screen, but its average performance and weak battery life are disappointing.

The HP Pavilion dv7-6123cl delivers decent productivity performance and excellent battery life, but it isn't going to blow you away with raw computing or graphics power. But if you're looking for a thinner, lighter, and slightly smaller desktop replacement notebook that can handle games, Dell's XPS 15z is your best bet.

The new dv7 is a definite improvement on the previous model. It's still a 3.4kg knee-cruncher but now it has an understated design that minimises the bulk of the system and the audio quality is far better. We still have some quibbles about the glossy screen and ultra-shiny screen bezel, and about having a backlight for the trackpad but not the keyboard. Storage, memory and ports are all top notch. And while we're delighted that the heat issues are gone, the AMD processor doesn't always match up to Intel Sandy Bridge with dedicated graphics for gaming.

We're slightly disappointed by the performance of the HP in comparison to the other models, though it is indicative of the differences we see between Intel and AMD's processors in the WorldBench 6 suite. There are some real highlights though - the design is very pleasing in both practical and aesthetic terms and the generous storage provision is remarkable too. It's the price tag, though, that is the most impressive thing about the HP - £849.

The HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx has a lot of features to recommend it, like WiDi 2.0, WiMAX 4G, and USB 3.0. However, the Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL6 offers the same features at the same price, but in a slightly more portable 15.6-inch package. If your work/life requires a bigger screen, longer battery life (2 hours more than Asus), better audio quality (though not by much), and more security out of its fingerprint reader, then the dv7-6b55dx might be the better option. But it's not quite enough to usurp the Asus U56E-BBL6 as the current Editors' Choice, if only because it got there first.

There's a lot to like about the HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx. It's not that it's an extraordinary laptop or anything, and maybe I'm just too used to seeing ugly, cheap-looking Windows laptops at its price, but the dv7 looks and feels much better than its cost would suggest. HP specializes in developing and manufacturing computing, storage, and networking hardware, software and services. Major product lines include personal computing devices, enterprise servers, related storage devices, as well as a diverse range of printers and other imaging products. Other product lines, including electronic test equipment and systems, medical electronic equipment, solid state components and instrumentation for chemical analysis. HP posted US $91.7 billion in annual revenue in 2006, making it the world's largest technology vendor in terms of sales. In 2007 the revenue was $104 billion, making HP the first IT company in history to report revenues exceeding $100 billion. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).
AMD Radeon HD 6490M: Entry to middle class graphics card based on the Seymore XT codename with support for fast GDDR5. The chip can be clocked at 700-750 with GDDR5 and 800 with slow DDR3.
AMD Radeon HD 6515G2:
Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 6490M and a 6480G APU graphics card (in the processor core of the A-Series).
AMD Radeon HD 6545G2: Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 6490M and a 6520G APU graphics card (e.g. found in the AMD A6-3400M CPU).
AMD Radeon HD 6770M:

AMD Radeon HD 7690M: Essentially a renamed Radeon HD 6750M, the Radeon HD 7690M shares many of the same specifications but with slightly higher DDR3 memory clock rates
Intel HD Graphics 3000: 3 upcoming (Q1 2011) integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The 3000 / 200 is the faster internally GT2 called version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T9400:
The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

17.0: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.
