Google extends Stadia Controller's Bluetooth switch expiration date

When Google shut down its Stadia game streaming service in early 2023, it allowed owners of the Stadia Controller to convert it from a Wi-Fi controller into a Bluetooth controller that can be used with other devices.

The online tool for converting the controller was originally scheduled to be taken offline on December 31, 2023 but Google postponed it until December 31, 2024. Now, Google has once again extended the date.

The Stadia Controller page now says that owners of the controller have until the 31st of December 2025 to switch the Wi-Fi controller to Bluetooth mode, an extension by an additional year. The switch permanently disables Wi-Fi support but still allows the use of USB mode.

While the switch to Bluetooth mode prevents the Stadia Controller from turning into e-waste, there are some drawbacks such as inability to use headphones with the 3.5mm audio jack or USB port. This is because the controller's Bluetooth Low Energy connection doesn't support passthrough audio. However, when used in wired mode via the USB port (Windows or Android), the audio jack will work.

When the switch is completed, the controller can be paired to a wide range of devices including Windows 10 and 11 PCs + Steam, MaccOS 13 + Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. Users can also remap the Assistant and Capture buttons.
