Maybe money can't buy you love, but it sure can get you some speed. Decked out with a Core i7 Extreme processor, a solid-state drive, and a generous helping of DDR3 RAM.This $4,000 uber-laptop offers record-breaking speed with plenty of 3D horsepower. If money's not an issue, it's a great pick for gaming, content creation, and entertainment use.

If performance is your number-one priority, and you prefer a notebook over a desktop, then Eurocom's D900F Panther is a very good choice—assuming cost is no object. Even though it's bigger than the fully loaded Trapper Keeper binder that you might have lugged around in school, this behemoth of a laptop is still more portable than a desktop. The Panther is a huge, heavy beast, but it offers performance rivaling that of the fastest desktop PCs.

The 'Panther' bit isn't referring to the not-so-lithe chassis. Another month, another enormous desktop replacement that threatens to break the fragile worktops in the our labs clean in half, Eurocom have released the D900F Panther Core i7 laptop. That means lighter laptops, better battery life and uncompromising performance are just around the corner. In turn, our advice is to hold off on a new gaming laptop until then.

Model: Once a laptop is tagged as a workstation, you'll expect massive capabilities. Indeed, the fully customizable Eurocom D900F Panther workstation is designed to cope with the most demanding tasks. Its design is kept fairly low profile as it is targeted at professionals wanting portability.

The most powerful model comes with a 17 inch widescreen Ultrasharp WUXGA display with either a glossy or matte surface. The entirely black laptop is capable of packing in either an Intel Core i7 Extreme with 6 cores or an XEON 5500/5600 series processor. Combined with the ability to jam in a 24 GB DDR3 RAM and a 4 GB GDDR5 Nvida Quadro 5010M, the laptop will seriously have firepower bordering overkill for a portable setup. If this is not enough, users can opt for an expendable bay to power multiple external monitors.

There is a plethora of storage options with 4 storage slots enabling a combination of HDD and SSD. Other options include an optical drive, Windows installation and even a TV tuner. Needless to say the Eurocom D900F Panther Workstation is intended for hard-core users with highest requirements. There are also gamer-friendly components to choose from but it still comes at a significant cost.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M:

The GeForce GTX 280M is based on the G92b chip with all 128 pipelines and, as a result, shares more similarities to the desktop 9800 GTX+ than the desktop GTX 280. Regardless, the high clock rate makes the GTX 280M considerably faster than the 9800M GTX.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

17.00":

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

5.4 kg:

A laptop in this weight range is a heavyweight that you rarely carry around. This is meant for desktops and the devices tend to score with a large display and high performance and replace desktop devices.

Eurocom: Eurocom Corporation is a computer hardware manufacturing company founded in 1989 with offices in Canada and USA. Eurocom produces Desktop Replacement Notebooks and Mobile Workstations.

80.25%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
