Electric G-Wagon to launch with quad-motor off-road prowess on April 24 ↺
Mercedes-Benz has teased the upcoming electrified version of its legendary G-Class SUV (aka the G-Wagon or G-Wagen) in YouTube videos, and it has been confirmed that the EV will be built by Magna Steyr. A new report out of Autocar claims that the G580 will be launched in China on April 24 alongside other new Mercedes-Benz EVs and hybrids.
The electric G-Wagon will reportedly also be available later this year — although it's unclear exactly when — which is a stark departure from the years-long wait times we've come to expect from the likes of Tesla and some other EV competitors.
While not everything is known about the electric G580, Mercedes-Benz previously teased that the boxy EV would feature a quad-motor 4×4 setup and a 100 kWh battery pack that should net around 200–220 miles of range. Although that's not a stellar figure, Mercedes-Benz claims that the EV will offer the same no-compromises off-road performance as its petrol-powered counterparts.
Pricing has not yet been leaked or confirmed by Mercedes-Benz, however, it would be surprising to see the electric luxury off-roader launch at anything less than the $143,000 Mercedes-Benz charges for the regular petrol-powered G-Class.
What's more, the G-Wagon EV will be built on a modified ladder-frame chassis ripped straight out of the internal-combustion versions of the automotive legend and slightly modified for use with the sizeable battery. This should give the EV a classic feel and typical G-Wagon off-road dominance.
