Kia EV5 electric SUV for export now in mass production
An international version of the Kia EV5 is now being mass-produced at the company’s Yancheng plant in China. The electric vehicle launched in China in November, with a right-hand drive variant expected to land in Australia later this year. The model also recently went on sale in Thailand, the first country to receive the exported model from China.
The EV5 joins the EV6 in Australia as a smaller model. The entry-level FWD Air trim offers a 160 kW motor and a 64.2 kWh battery delivering up to 530 km (~330 miles) range. Next in the line-up is the Earth Long Range version, with an 88kWh battery increasing the range to 720 km (~450 miles). At the top of this range is the Earth Exclusive AWD model, adding a 70 kW motor at the rear, also featuring the higher capacity power pack with up to 650 km (~400 miles) range.
The Kia EV5 is expected to arrive in Australia this June, though the company still needs to provide the exact launch date and pricing. Rumors suggest that the EV5 Air could have a lower RRP than the Tesla Model Y, which retails for A$65,400. For context, the EV6 starts at 149,800 yuan (~$20,800/A$31,900). The new model is also expected to launch in Canada and Mexico.
