Premium? A long time rumors about the succession of the slim Adamo series flew thick and fast. Now, we know the official answer: Adamo turns into Dell XPS -z. The 15-inch model of the new slim aluminium laptops is already under review. Here are the first results.

The good years are past. Dell has put its XPS range on a diet and re-places the result as the XPS z-series. You wouldn't quite believe that it is a successor of the exclusive Adamo, which was considered to be an opponent of the MacBook Air at the time. Be that as it may, connoisseurs of good design will nevertheless be satisfied.

This particular configuration of the Dell XPS 15z will set you back by Rs.84,900, which makes it quite expensive and definitely a premium notebook. Having said that, we will say that you won’t be disappointed with this notebook. The design, finish and the attention given to every detail are impeccable and we can see why they’ve priced it this high. If you are on the look-out for a premium grade notebook, then the XPS 15z is a very good option to start with.

Dell XPS 15z Review: Kinda Luxurious
Source: PC Perspective English Archive.org version
The XPS 15z can’t hang with the design of such stiff competition, though that doesn’t mean it should be written off. There are always some buyers who will value hardware bang-for-the-buck above all else, and people with this mindset will want to give the XPS 15z a serious look. As mentioned earlier, an Envy 15 with similar equipment is several hundred more - and a base MacBook Pro 15" goes for $500 more than this Dell. Some consumers will find it difficulty to justify paying more for similar hardware.

The Dell is equally comfortable as a desktop replacement or a travelling companion, though perhaps at over 2.5kg you might not want to carry it around for long periods too often. The price tag of almost £1200 is high, but despite our reservations about the keyboard, the overly reflective glossy display and the positioning of USB ports, the Dell XPS 15z is a good all-rounder – especially with entertainment-focused tasks. But in overall build quality, security or the fine attention to all the details, an Apple MacBook Pro it ain't.

The higher end performance coupled with the aluminum design make that message loud and clear. Does it succeed? Yes and no. People who want to have a Mac and Mac OS X will still turn to an Apple MacBook of some form, but products like the XPS 15z demonstrate that the Windows PC folks in the audience have stylish choices too.

This unit does tend to heat up after prolonged use, with some of the heat making its way onto some sections of the palmrest area - a point to keep in mind for users who plan to use it on their laps in a non air-conditioned environment. Moreover, while I do like the overall design, the option of having excluded a dedicated numpad in favour of oversized audio grills, which at the end of the day don't really give that great a performance either, was rather ill conceived - I do value form, but only as long as it doesn’t sacrifice on functionality. Also, Dell doesn’t allow you an easy access to the innards, which given this units price tag, should have been an included feature, and one which would have been much appreciated.

The Dell XPS 15z is priced at Rs. 81,800 and comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. If you’re only going by the specs, the Dell Vostro is a cheaper purchase, but as with XPS laptops, you’re paying premium bucks for the looks, build and the overall feel of the laptop. So, if these things do matter to you, then the Dell XPS 15z is definitely worth the buy.

Certainly, the 15z’s base pricing of £899 appeals, particularly for those who prefer Windows or are OS-indifferent. It’s also easily portable at 2.5kg, despite packing in enough top-end components to make it a machine you could use without frustration day-to-day. It isn’t exactly a revolution in laptop design, but it balances aesthetics, performance and price handily enough.

The Dell XPS 15z is a really impressive combination of design, features, performance, battery life and all-round appeal. The XPS 15z impresses in most areas and falls short in a just a few. Its thin metal chassis has excellent quality and the 1080p display is top notch. Performance is stellar for most applications including some gaming and it still manages over six hours of battery life. The biggest downside of this notebook is the lifeless keyboard, which just isn't fun to type on. Additionally the speakers could be better, the screen's glossy surface creates a lot of reflections, and upgrading this notebook is very tough. Then there's a matter of price; the XPS 15z starts at $999 but ours came out to a tick over $2,000 stocked with top-shelf components. The base notebook is almost certainly the better value; just make sure you get the 1080p display. The XPS 15z is certainly a recommendable notebook; if the keyboard were better, it would be almost perfect.

Dell XPS 15z: Sincerely Flattering
Source: AnandTech English Archive.org version
You can call the XPS 15z whatever you want. Is it a cheap knockoff of the MacBook Pro 15? Yes, but that’s just it: it’s a lot less expensive for a similar experience. The MacBook Pro 15 still wins out on build quality, and it packs a quad-core CPU. For the price, however, the XPS 15z is still a very nice laptop—and I know quite a few people that have already purchased the 15z for their own use.

Cool but perhaps not stylish, the Dell XPS 15z is a premium model with some great hits and a few misses. Battery life saw the system survive for a hair under four hours with Wi-Fi on and web-centric actual use. Not terrible, but considering some of the all-day results we've been seeing from some units these days, it's behind the curve a little.

Although it's priced to move, the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) is no poor man's MacBook Pro. Its high-grade aluminum enclosure is every bit as luxurious as that of its nemesis, while its parts can breeze through any piece of software—yet it won't cost you nearly as much. Buying from the Microsoft Store means that this laptop is stripped of most of the third-party software and includes free (but limited) technical support—that's the only thing that distinguishes this version from those bought elsewhere. But the 15z is a highly rated desktop replacement no matter you buy it.

Despite some niggling issues, we've come away modestly impressed with the XPS 15z. The notebook's design may not be original (far from it), but the end result is an elegant-looking machine that's thin, light and armed with plenty of power beneath the hood. Let's hope that the XPS 15z proves to be a turning point for Dell, signaling a new direction for Dell consumer product design and engineering in general, rather than a niche "high style" brand that will represent only a small fraction of the company's consumer sales. Perhaps in two or three years, the Dell lineup will consist entirely of sleek, stylish, well-built models with great features and reasonable prices. And we'll say, "You know, it all started with that XPS 15z." Regardless of how things turn out, this is one of the best laptops Dell has made in a long time. It has its quirks, and it's not a great value in its higher-priced configurations, but it hits all the right notes. It's good enough to make me look forward to the future models of the XPS z-series, and to hope that the sensibilities that produced this laptop find expression throughout Dell's product lines.

Hot on the heels of the 2011 update of the Dell XPS 15, which we looked at back in May, is the release of that machine's hip younger brother, the XPS 15z. There is a lot to like about the Dell XPS 15z; primarily, it has a good configuration, strong build quality, a Full HD screen and a good price ($1698 at the time of writing). However, its keyboard is awful; it is perhaps the worst keyboard we've ever seen on a Dell laptop. We're also not fans of the design, which looks a little tacky — especially the ribbed hinges and chrome trim.

These two laptops are not equals, but they never had to be -- for hundreds upon hundreds of dollars less than the Mac competition, Dell's unleashed an attractive, powerful and definitely desirable Windows PC. It's perhaps desirable enough to woo buyers who prefer Windows but love the Mac aesthetic. We suspect that's Dell's plan here, because while we really appreciate the XPS 15z's metal construction and choice parts, it hasn't really changed the game.

The Dell XPS 15z addresses the two major concerns we had with the XPS 15, namely, bulk and endurance. This slimmed-down system has a more elegant, streamlined look and measures less than an inch thick. Plus, you get 6 hours of battery life. Our only major complaint is that the keyboard doesn't feel as comfortable as it should and that it's hard to see the letters when the backlight is off. Is the $1,534 asking price worth it when you can get a similarly configured XPS 15 with Blu-ray for $1,299? Yes, if you're willing to pay more for portability. Besides, our XPS 15z is still less expensive than the 15-inch MacBook Pro. That machine offers longer battery life but starts at $1,799. Bottom line: If you're shopping for a Windows notebook, the XPZ 15z is one of the better 15-inch machines that money can buy.

As awe-inspiring as the XPS 15 is, it was neither thin nor light enough to compete on the same level as the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt). Dell had the answer in its now-defunct Adamo line and applied it to the XPS 15z. I wouldn't call it the thinnest 15-inch laptop on the planet, but it can definitely give the MacBook Pro a run for its money in terms of thinness and looks. Its speed and battery scores lived up to expectation, but more importantly, you pay significantly less than what you would for the MacBook Pro 15-inch.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

2620M: Very fast Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.60":

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

2.54 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

79.51%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
