YouTuber Michael Stevens, known as Vsauce, has unveiled a strikingly unconventional product that is attracting significant attention. The Death Clock is a device that counts down the seconds of a person’s remaining time. It was developed by the online store Inqfactory, which is closely associated with Vsauce. The launch video, titled "All the Ghosts You Will Be" and released on July 16, 2025, has already amassed around 2.5 million views. Instead of focusing on the technology, the video explores the philosophical ideas behind the concept.
The Death Clock resembles a gadget from the 1980s, featuring a compact design with a red LED segment display, rotary knobs and a bold red button. It offers two modes: a standard time display and a so-called lifetime mode. When activated, lifetime mode starts a countdown showing, in seconds, the user’s statistically estimated remaining lifespan. The calculation is based on personal data such as age, profession, lifestyle and other relevant factors.
Vsauce’s video openly promotes the Death Clock, but its focus goes far beyond the product itself. It explores themes of digital legacy, memory and mortality. The Death Clock is presented not just as a tech gadget, but as a symbol. “You will be forgotten – but you will leave a mark,” the video declares in its dramatic closing scene. Latin phrases engraved on the device – memento mori (“remember you are dying”) and tempus fugit (“time is fleeting”) – reinforce its thought-provoking message. The underlying idea is not merely to track time, but to truly grasp its fleeting, finite nature.
