Cybertruck deliveries to start with cheaper dual-motor trim as Tesla reverts reservation price hike
Tesla is gearing up for the Cybertruck price and specs announcement at a dedicated delivery event on November 30 at Giga Texas. There, it will deliver at least 10 inaugural pickups to select industry influencers, just as it is now distributing Cybertruck display units to select showrooms and service centers across the US.
According to one Tesla rep in Denver, the initial Cybertruck delivery batches will consist solely of the dual-motor version. The tri-motor Cybertruck Performance trim will reportedly be shipped to those who preordered it in the second, or even the third quarter of 2024. Yesterday, Tesla briefly raised the preorder reservation price to $250, but subsequently reverted it back to the initial $100 tag.
The tipster who spoke with Tesla's rep is the same who correctly predicted that Tesla will commence delivering Cybertrucks to its showrooms shortly before launch. When he claimed this back in August, he also mentioned that Tesla won't be strict about the reservation order, but will rather distribute the first units to select "industry influencers," trying to raise the Cybertruck's profile among the general pickup public, too.
While this part of the rumor is yet to be confirmed, the source recently reiterated that Tesla won't go by the general reservation list numbers, but rather "when a store gets one or a few in, they’ll go down their local list from those who placed an actual order and text/call asking if they want it or not."
Tesla did the same during the Model 3 launch, too, as the issue was with supply and it took many quarters for its manufacturing to ramp up in meaningful numbers. The same "production hell" could be happening with the Cybertruck initially, which would explain why the tri-motor Performance trim may arrive next summer. At the last quarterly call, Elon Musk predicted that meaningful Cybertruck production output that will level supply with demand can only happen in 2025.
As for the Cybertruck's price, the last rumor was that those industry influencers who are getting Tesla's electric pickup first, have been told "mid to high 70s," which sounds a bit steep if referring solely to the dual-motor version, 20 or so units of which can now be seen on display in select Tesla stores.
