ASUS’ N61Vn notebook is designed for entertainment, with a 16in LCD screen, plus it has enough power to chew through 3D rendering tasks with ease. It boasts a multi-touch trackpad, but lacks the appeal of other fashion-conscious notebooks from Sony or Apple. ASUS N61Vn notebook has a multi-touch trackpad, a 720p-capable LCD display and an optical drive capable of reading Blu-ray discs. It won’t last long without the power adapter, but this fashion-conscious entertainment notebook provides serious performance.

The ASUS N61Ja is a 16in notebook with a fast Core i5-430M CPU and a lot of modern features. With plenty of CPU speed, memory and hard drive space, the ASUS N61Ja is a great desktop replacement notebook. It even features a USB 3.0 port, which means you'll be able to run USB 3.0-based external hard drives at their maximum speed. We just wish the notebook had a backlit keyboard and a better screen.

It's clear that ASUS did their homework in putting together a competitive midrange notebook. The $900 price point was probably set by Amazon from the start, and ASUS has done everything they can to provide a quality mobile solution while stretching the available budget as far as possible. There are laptops that are smaller with better battery life, but they're also slower. Other laptops provide similar performance and better battery life, but they cost more. The one thing that nearly every other option is currently missing is NVIDIA's Optimus Technology, and that gives the ASUS and the N61Jv a clear leg up over the competition.

Impaired Optimus. Nvidia's newest switchable technology amongst graphic cards stands for best runtimes in powerful mainstream notebooks. The following review explains why the 16 incher doesn't live up to the credo.
Source: PC Perspective Archive.org version
My overall experience with the ASUS N61Jv was extremely positive thanks to the performance the Core i5 processor and NVIDIA GT325M GPU offer, the large screen and keyboard/touch pad combination. For a 16-in notebook coming in over 6 lbs, which definitely puts it closer to the desktop replacement category than the thin and light, getting 2 hours and 23 minutes in our very strenuous battery testing was actually pretty solid making leaving without your power cord at least an option. The added goodies like USB 3.0 support definitely add the value of a notebook that sells for $899 which should make it a great option for a summer or fall college-bound consumer or anyone else on the lookout for this combination.

Overall this is an impressive piece of kit. It delivers the kind of battery life we would expect from a six cell offering at this price point, but its form factor means that it is more likely to be used near a power point than on a train. It also has by far the best implementation of dual graphics technology to date on a laptop. Add in the robust performance, the great build quality and a forward-looking feature set, and you have a very impressive piece of midrange hardware.

The Asus N61 series of laptops is the first to feature Nvidia’s Optimus technology, a technology that takes hybrid graphics, in laptops, to another level altogether. If you really need these features, then, at Rs. 50,490 (excluding taxes), this laptop is an excellent pick. However, if you want a laptop for general office work, light entertainment and not for GPU-intensive tasks, then there are other laptops that cost much less and don’t have these many features.

The Asus N61J will be priced at Rs.50,490 excluding taxes and will come with a one-year warranty. This is a very good pricing for this latest technology. The thing is Asus is the first Notebook vendor that will be bringing Optimus to the end user and they already have a line up of notebooks (UL50Vf, N61Jv, N71Jv, N82Jv, and U30Jc) ready to go. Right now there isn't any competition from other manufacturers, but you expect others to follow suit soon.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M: The GeForce GT 240M is the successor of the GT 130M / 9600M and has now 48 instead of 32 shader cores. Therefore, the performance should be noticeable better. Because of the 40nm process, the TDP is still 23 Watt.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730: The HD 5730 is a higher clocked HD 5650 (and therefore not based on the desktop HD 5700 series). It does not support GDDR5 and therfore performs like a middle class graphics card with DirectX 11.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 325M: Slower clocked GeForce GT 330M middle class card and similar to the GT 230M.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Quad: Mobile version of the desktop Quad Core processor. Due to low clock rates it is not recommended for most applications.
Q9000:
Slow clocked quad core CPU (4 cores) that suffers especially in many games from the low clock speed. Therefore, not suited for games and only for highly multi threaded applications.
Intel Core i5:
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
520M:
The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
Intel Core i3:
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
16.00:
This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.699 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3 kg:
82.45%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
