Cheaper. After the review of the N56VZ with the powerful GeForce GT 650M, we will now have a look at the cheaper model with a GeForce GT 630M.

Beneath the stylish exterior of the N56V, there lies a sleeping beast; a beast with a roar loader than any others that lay before it. That beast is a brand new Intel Core i7-3720QM 2.6GHz processor, one of the chip giant's third generation Core CPUs.

If you want a powerful multimedia laptop the N56 should be on your short list. It’s admittedly expensive, but no more so that similar competition. Also, if ASUS acts as it has in the past, there will be a base-trim model available within a few months offering an entry-level Ivy Bridge quad or an Ivy Bridge dual-core. This hypothetical PC would be a great value.

Actually, we're eager to try out more Ivy Bridge portables, period. There's a flood coming from Asus and other vendors, but with its blazing performance and first-rate screen and keyboard, the Asus N56VM has set the bar high.

From the moment I first opened the package and pulled out the N56VM, I have been impressed with ASUS’ latest hardware. The silver palm rest is a nice change of pace from all the black laptops I’ve tested during the past few years, the keyboard is comfortable to use, and the display is a great improvement over all the low quality 1366x768 displays we—and our readers—have been complaining about.

All up, the N56VM is a very good laptop. It was most enjoyable to use thanks to its good keyboard, touchpad and matte screen and we found the sound quality to be exceptional, too. It can supply swift performance for office applications, but it can also be used capably as a gaming machine, as long as you aren't used to playing with super-high detail settings. For an asking price of $1399, we think it's well worth it.

Surprising sound quality. With the N56 series, Asus has updated its high-end multimedia notebooks with Ivy Bridge processors in addition to a full chassis redesign. A special highlight with this series is an external Bang & Olufsen subwoofer that can improve sound quality significantly.

In the end, there are so many things Asus managed to get right with their N56 that you’re going to forget about the tiny details that are a bit OFF. In fact, if the body wouldn’t get hot when pushing the laptop, I’d have nothing to list as a serious down-side for this machine. But be aware that if you’re looking to play a lot of games and run intensive pieces of software most of the time, the heating issue can be a deal breaker.

Before we wrap this up, let's go over the software bundle. It features Windows 7 Home Premium, the limited and ad-supported Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and CyberLink's MediaSuite for disc-creation chores. We found no antivirus app—not even a trial—but a boatload of Asus utilities of varying value, including Asus @Vibe, which provides a full-screen interface for listening to music and Internet radio and shopping for games and books.

Asus looked to add to the multimedia line of laptops with the N56VZ-DS71. It has a beautiful 1080p 15.6-inch display, great audio quality and speedy performance. While it does lack in battery life, it makes up for it in its design and set of multimedia features.

The ASUS N56V combines understated elegance with powerhouse specs. For $1,149 (as little as $1,089 at some stores), consumers walk away with the potent combination of quad-core Ivy Bridge and Nvidia graphics in addition to a beautiful 1080p matte display and robust audio. The bundled external subwoofer doesn't add that much of an impact, but it's a nice perk.

You are paying a bit of a premium for the 2.1 speakers, HD screen and Blu-ray drive, so if you simply need a fast 15.6in laptop then there are obviously cheaper options available. However, the N56VM is a very capable multimedia laptop that will earn its keep as part of your home entertainment system, or delivering slick multimedia presentations in the boardroom.

What makes this laptop distinguished above others for this price is probably the combination of the added value for this price – nice external subwoofer, 1TB HDD, the good matte 1080p screen, very good keyboard and comfortable/big touchpad, not-too-bad speakers (which I suggest replacing with 50$ speakers), backlit keyboard, the stylish looks and the very good thermals / noise levels.

Essentially a renamed GeForce GT 555M available in two or more variants with 96 or 144 shaders and 128 bit / 192 bit DDR3 or GDDR5 memory.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3720QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1250 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
3610QM:
An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
3630QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz
AMD A-Series:
A10-4600M: Mobile Quad-Core processor with only two FP calculation units and an integrated Radeon HD 7660G graphics card.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.8 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
85.17%: This is a good rating above average. Nevertheless you should not forget, that 10-15% of all notebook-models get a better rating.
