The Asus F3JP's modern and stylish design is similar to that of the Mesh Asus F3JC and is predominantly silver and metallic. What a package! We loved the Asus F3JP's combination of style, value for money and features. And the F3JP's performance convinces. A top laptop.

Asus is a brand that is becoming increasingly well established in the UK. Like its competitors such as MSI, it has branched out into areas such as notebooks with great success. This isn't really that surprising as Asus has been an OEM manufacturer for many company's notebooks for many years. If you're looking for a notebook with a large screen and plenty of raw performance at an affordable price then this will fit the bill. However, the display resolution is not the highest, the screen quality is only OK and the graphics performance can only be described as adequate for current games.

If you're on a low budget and don't want to compromise on build quality or weaker components, then you may just find a sweet spot for an Asus F3 series notebook. The F3Jc has everything I want and has awesome value for the money paid, you'll even get a free carry bag and optical Asus-branded Logitech notebook mouse. It does have some weaker points, such as noise and infrequent minor technical glitches, but otherwise well worth the buy.

The F3SV-B1 offers excellent performance and lots of multimedia bells and whistles at an affordable price. Asus proves that you don't have to spend two grand to own a powerful notebook. Featuring fast Nvidia graphics and Intel's Next Generation Centrino Duo Technology, this system has more than enough muscle for Vista and even for 3D gaming. It's not the sleekest machine on the block, but you get a lot for your money. The 14.2 x 10.8 x 1.5-inch Asus F3SV-B1 features a subdued black and silver color scheme and weighs 6.5 pounds (view photo gallery). That's significantly more than the 5.8-pound Sony VAIO FZ, but that notebook costs about $400 more when similarly configured, and it comes with the less powerful Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT graphics card. This system rocks Nvidia's more powerful 8600M GS card. We liked the keyboard; the keys are well spaced and responsive, which makes them conducive to both gaming and typing.

The Asus name has been synonymous with quality notebooks, and the F3sv-A1 certainly exemplifies it. The F3sv-A1 is a replacement for the previous F3j line of notebooks, sporting a new build, motherboard while still preserving the high-end yet budget gaming experience. I purchased the Asus F3sv-A1 for $1,425, and received a 3% cash rebate via Fatwallet, bringing the total to $1,383. The notebook feels very sturdy and professional. The chassis is entirely made from strong plastic. The F3sv does not seem painted, so I suspect there won't be any lifting of paint on the palmrest. The notebook has a business like professional design. While Asus touts this notebook as a gaming notebook with a lot of horsepower, there isn't any sign of geekiness that its bigger brother the G1S has. The entire notebook feels strong and well constructed. With the help of the battery pack, the notebook is raised in the rear portion to further heat dissipation. The notebook arrived packed very neatly in a sleek corrugated cardboard box with a plastic handle.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 is a middle class video card of the 7000 series and suited for games of the year 2006. The performance is very similar to ATI X1600 / X1700. Compared to the desktop 7600 it is clearly slower.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 / 7700 for laptops and technically a higher clocked 8400M GT. The performance is slightly above the 7600 / 7700 and, therefore, it can represent DirectX9 games fluently. For DirectX 10 effects, the power of the card is not sufficient.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600: This is a DirectX 10 graphic card from ATI and direct competitor to the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphic card for laptops and performs in games much better than the Nvidia card.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700: Successor of the X1600 and because of strained silicium process it can achieve a higher performance with the same current consumption (more shaders). The Avivo video engine helps decoding (HD) videos.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 is a middle class graphic card for notebooks of the X1000 series. Its performance can be compared with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 is part of the lower performance segment and the competitor card of the ATI X1300. Technically it is simply lower clocked GeForce Go 7300.
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G: The 8400M G is a pared-down 8400M GS with only half as much Stream Processors and a smaller memory bus. Therefore, the performance is much lower and only as fast as the old 7400 card. Only MPEG-2 acceleration.
ATI Mobility Radeon X2300: Renamed X1350 graphics chip and, therefore, only DirectX 9 capable.
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150: Integrated graphic card (shared memory) for AMD based laptops (nForce Go 430 MCP). The performance is slightly better than GMA 950.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T5600:
Slow clocked dual core processor based on the Merom core featuring virtualization functions VT-x.
T7100: Entry level to mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.
T7300: Mid-range (at the time of annoucement) dual core processor based on the Merom core.
T7500:
The Core 2 Duo T7500 is a Merom based Core 2 Duo with 4MB Level 2 Cache. It is positioned in the middle class (in 2009) and performs on par with a modern P7550 or Turion II Ultra M640/M660.
Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.
TL-52:
In 90nm produced dual core processor with a low clock rate of 1.6 GHz. The TL-52 is still based on the K8 core and compareable to a slower clocked Core Duo.
TL-56:
In 90nm (33W TDP) and 65nm (31W TDP) produced dual core processor with a clock rate of 1.8 GHz. The TL-56 is still based on the K8 core and compareable to a slower clocked Core Duo.
15.4: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. Nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.8 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
3.3 kg:
81.64%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
