Reviews for the Medion MD96480
Source: Pocket Lint

The MD96480 from Medion is a good performing laptop for the budget, but not surprisingly, not really up to heavy use. This is reflected in the sub £600 price point however.
The sub £600 laptop market is a crowded one, so it would be worth taking a look at the competition before heading down to Sainsbury's and picking this model up, however there are some really nice features here like the 250GB hard drive and HMDI socket that shouldn't be overlooked. The MD96480 from Medion is a good performing laptop for the budget, but not surprisingly, not really up to heavy use.

The Medion MD 96480 exceeded our expectations for a laptop priced at just £600. The hard drive capacity, memory and extras such as a TV tuner and integrated webcam make this a recommended laptop to buy for everyday use, entertainment and gaming. Provided, that is, you don’t mind the run-of-the-mill design and minimal software bundle.

Notebooks have risen in popularity not only because of their falling prices, but also because they offer great simplicity. There's no need to plug in a monitor or keyboards when starting, for instance. At the heart of this notebook - available exclusively from Sainsbury's - lies an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 1.5GHz, with 2GB of memory. Combined with Nvidia's Geforce 8600M GS graphics card, which will play all modern computer games at decent settings, the system showed good performance all-round. A whopping 250GB hard disk, one of the biggest to be found in any notebook computer, makes the MD96480 a top choice for anyone dealing with a lot of videos or music. It doesn't miss out on other features either, with the inclusion of a webcam and a memory card reader built in. The two extremely tinny speakers didn't impress us, though, so the front-mounted headphone and surround-sound outputs are valuable inclusions.

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS is the DirectX 10 capable successor of the GeForce Go 7600 / 7700 for laptops and technically a higher clocked 8400M GT. The performance is slightly above the 7600 / 7700 and, therefore, it can represent DirectX9 games fluently. For DirectX 10 effects, the power of the card is not sufficient.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
