70%Desktop ReplacementsSource: Wired MagazineDon't let the chunky Aspire's aging videocard and 2-GHz Pentium M chip turn you off; there's still a lot to love. Wired: Decent performance and battery life. Two gigs of RAM Stylish, slot-loading DVD drive. Tired: Last year's videocard and CPU. Wears as all-plastic construction like a cheap suit.

The Acer Aspire 9504WSMi, with Windows XP Media Center Edition, is a good entertainment notebook that has the power to serve as an office workhorse. The sheer breadth of its features is impressive. However, this Aspire doesn't quite get everything right; in particular, the speakers and the keyboard don't do justice to this sturdy black-and-silver unit. I liked the screen, a dazzling 17-inch display with an easy-to-read WXGA+ resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. The laptop's 120GB 5400-rpm hard drive is top of the line, and the multiformat DVD burner is the same sleek, slot-fed type found on Apple notebooks.

Like all of the other units in this roundup, the Acer impresses first with its size and heft. The exterior has an attractive pearl-gray metallic surface on its upper deck and around the sides, and is covered with a clearcoat that is surprisingly resistant to smudges and smears. (This is not the case for all notebooks, as we'll see later.) The bottom of the unit is made of tough black plastic, with six rubber feet for support on a coffee table or desktop surface.

Pitting Acer's multimedia desktop replacement, the Aspire 9500, against our Editors' Choice-winning Toshiba Qosmio G25 is like enacting a standoff between two notorious gunslingers: both are so evenly matched that it's hard to guess which will remain standing when the smoke clears. Each laptop offers compelling features, including a huge 17-inch wide-screen display, multimedia controls, an integrated TV tuner, and very similar configurations. The difference ultimately comes down to price vs. performance. The Aspire 9500 is slightly less powerful than its competitor but also considerably less costly--at $1,999, it's one of the least expensive models available with a built-in TV tuner.

If there was one notebook lacking from Acer's impressive new lineup, it was a true Media Center system—but no longer. The Acer Aspire AS9504WSMi fills that void, integrating a TV tuner, fast components, and a bright, widescreen LCD panel. Now you can sit at your desk and watch all your favorite TV programs and movies without ever making the grueling trek to the living room. Tipping the scales at 8.5 pounds, the Aspire is a system that should remain on your desk. But part of that heft is the 17-inch LCD. Its CrystalBrite technology enhances brightness—as do the similar Toshiba TruBrite and HP BrightView—giving you a very good cinematic experience.

To aspire, means to strive towards or to look up to, so it’s quite appropriate that the 9504WSMi sits atop Acer’s range of Aspire notebooks. As a flagship product with a powerful specification, the 9504 is something of a kitchen sink notebook, and can perform a large number of roles. It’s undoubtedly a desktop replacement notebook aimed at entertainment with some business focused tools thrown in as well. You could argue that it lacks focus, but we all like to mix business and pleasure sometimes. he chassis is large at 402 x 286 x 38.2mm and weighs in a 3.6Kg, which is heavy. But for that you’re rewarded with an impressive 17in widescreen display and a full size keyboard with a dedicated number pad on the right hand side, which is unusual in a notebook.

Acer is in a bullish mood at the moment, producing a range of good-quality products at aggressive prices. On the notebook front, the TravelMate 2403WXCi stormed the A List last month, and this 17in widescreen desktop replacement shows similar promise. Falling between the price and specifications of the A-Listed Gateway 8550GB and Evesham Voyager C720, the core components of the 9504WSMi consist of a 2GHz Pentium M and 1GB of PC4300 RAM. A solidly built laptop with plenty of entertainment features - including an integrated digital TV tuner - and a bright, clear display. Power and quality that won't break the bank
