iFixit has a new toolkit for appliance repairs, furniture builds, and more

iFixit, best known for its detailed gadget teardowns, has launched the Megalodon Driver Kit, a tool set designed for household repairs that its precision electronics kits and standard hardware tools do not cover well. The kit is priced at $34.95.
Megalodon pairs a driver handle with 16 bits, each extended to 2 inches in length, about double the reach of the 1-inch bits included in most consumer driver sets. iFixit said the extra length is built to reach fasteners recessed deep inside appliance housings, furniture joints, and car interiors, where standard bits run out of reach before making contact with the screw.
The bit selection covers Phillips sizes 0, 1, and 2, a 6mm flathead; Torx sizes TR10 through TR25; hex sizes 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 1/8 inch; square sizes 1 and 2; a 5/16 inch nut driver; and a 1/4 inch socket adapter. iFixit said the set was built from its own repair manuals and teardown data rather than padded out for the sake of a higher bit count.
The driver handle uses a push-to-lock Swivel Grip Cap instead of a ratchet mechanism. The cap spins freely for fast turning and locks in place under pressure when more torque is needed, a design iFixit said avoids the common complaint of ratchets being left set in the wrong direction. The kit ships with a sorting tray and case sized to fit inside a toolbox or a drawer.
iFixit tied the launch to its ongoing right-to-repair advocacy. Alongside advocacy group PIRG, the company conducted a study requested by the US Federal Trade Commission that found only 7 of 50 appliance manufacturers make service manuals publicly available. Right-to-repair laws covering household appliances have since passed in Minnesota, Oregon, Washington and Colorado, though iFixit said coverage across the country remains incomplete.
iFixit said Megalodon does not replace the need for public repair documentation and is not a substitute for right-to-repair legislation but described it as one piece of making home repair more standard and accessible. The company said a second kit in the same line, using fixed-blade drivers with the same Swivel Grip Cap, is planned to follow.
