Chinese smartphone maker ZTE will officially take the crown as the first smartphone maker to launch a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The company announced via Weibo that the Axon 20 5G will be officially unveiled on September 1, just a couple of weeks away. The technology is the stuff of futuristic dreams and only started appearing as working prototypes from various OEMs over the past twelve months.
If successfully implemented, the ZTE Axon 20 5G could be the harbinger of smartphones that completely eliminate unsightly notches, in-display selfie camera cut outs and even pop-up cameras. All these approaches have been adopted to reduce bezel sizes and maximize screen real estate, but have never been optimal. The under-display selfie-camera is the holy grail of smartphone makers looking to create a no-compromise all-screen smartphone that is still selfie-capable.
In terms of the rest of its features, the ZTE Axon 20 5G is a standard run-of-the-mill 2020 mid-range smartphone. It is powered by a Snapdragon 765G that will come in 6 GB/64 GB, 8 GB/128 GB and 12 GB/ 256 GB variants with microSD expansion support up to 1 TB. It will also sport a 4,120 mAh battery and will come in blue or white color options. But all eyes will be on its 6.92-inch Full HD+ OLED display that hides its 32MP selfie camera and fingerprint reader below the surface of the screen.
