Modder Kongmeng brings Yami Yugi, main character of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, to Dragon Ball FighterZ via PC game modding. But this is no common cosmetic mod—a fully-custom moveset, including monster summons, spell cards, and even the ability to lose by running out of cards, are all present.

As a seasoned PC gamer, it's not every day I see a mod that makes me truly perform a double take—but this fully-custom Yu-Gi-Oh! character mod for Dragon Ball FighterZ is worth the occasion, boasting one of the most thoughtful, faithful conversions of a character for a fighting game I've ever seen. The quality of the work on display here is right up there with the original developer Arc System Works' work bringing Cyberpunk Edgerunner's Lucy to Guilty Gear Strive as a guest character—and easily on par with official and unofficial Super Smash Bros. characters.

Yami Yugi has been brought to Dragon Ball FighterZ, complete with a roster of summonable monsters and subtitled Japanese voice-over. His ever-reliable companion in the anime, Dark Magician, serves as an ever-present "puppet character", which in fighting games refers to when you control two characters simultaneously (think Ice Climbers in Smash Bros. or Zato in Guilty Gear), since of course Yugi himself can't be trading blows with the likes of Cell or Frieza. Of course, other monsters can be summoned to join the fray here, but Dark Magician will definitely be the star of the show for most of your fighting.

The sheer attention to detail of this mod, including unique anime and TCG-faithful mechanics, is why I saw fit to cover it this Christmas morning. For true fans of Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and other major anime franchises that aired in the 90s and early 2000s, it's harder to imagine a sweeter gift than a well-designed way to for Dark Magician and Perfect Cell to duke it out.

There are really only three caveats worth noting:

  1. As a mod made exclusively for the PC version of the game, you'll need that to try it out. It's also unlikely to work online with anyone but other people who installed the mod, as with other Arc Systems games modding projects.
  2. Sadly, most character mods like this have to replace rather than add a new character slot, so this mod can't be installed while keeping Android 17 playable. Kongmeng does mention on the GameBanana page that they can "probably have it replace another character if needed", though.
  3. Finally, you will have to install it yourself, but the Unverum Mod Manager should help simplify that.

In any case, Merry Christmas, Yu-Gi-Oh! fans who play Dragon Ball FighterZ. I know y'all are out there, you share too many card shop tournament venues not to be.
