Xperia 5 II: Sony's new flagship is over 18% more expensive than its predecessor
Pricing and availability details of the Xperia 5 II have been revealed, following its launch earlier today. Initially, Sony vaguely stated that the device would go on sale in December, but that is not the case for all regions. In fact, the December date for availability only applies to the US, where the Xperia 5 II will arrive on the 4th of the month.
However, pre-orders for the device will open on September 29 in the US, as they will in Denmark. The situation is not as clear in other countries like the UK and Spain, but the Xperia 5 II will arrive in many EU markets from October 20. The full list and pricing details are as follows:
|Country||Launch and pre-order dates||Price|
|Denmark||Pre-orders - September 29Launch date - October 20||DKK 6,500|
|Italy||Pre-orders - From OctoberLaunch date - TBA||TBA|
|Norway||October 20||NOK 9,000|
|Sweden||October 20||SEK 9,000|
|US||Pre-orders - September 29Launch date - December 4||US$950|
So, the Xperia 5 II will be considerably cheaper than the Xperia 1 II. In the UK, for example, the Xperia 5 II will cost £299 less than the Xperia 1 II. A similar price difference exists in the Eurozone where the Xperia 1 II sells for €1,199. The Xperia 5 II will cost US$249 less than the Xperia 1 II in the US, though.
The Xperia 5 II may be competitively priced against other modern flagships, but there is a gulf between the price of the Xperia 5 II and its predecessor. Sony launched the Xperia 5 last year for US$799 or £699 in the UK. Additionally, the Xperia 5 II is only £49 cheaper than the Xperia 1 in the UK and is priced identically to last year's flagship in the US.
