WhatsApp's iOS app could get new AirDrop-like file sharing feature
WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature in its iOS beta program that allows users to share files with people in proximity without an internet connection. This functionality, similar to a feature announced earlier for the Android beta, will simplify the process of sharing documents, photos, and videos.
The feature is particularly useful in scenarios where internet connectivity is limited or unstable, especially for large media like high-resolution photos and videos. The company has been trying its best to facilitate the transfer of high-quality media, with the last big update letting users send uncompressed media on WhatsApp. According to a screenshot from the latest beta update (version 24.15.10.70), the current iteration on iOS appears to involve users scanning a QR code to initiate file sharing, which differs from the automatic device detection method being tested on Android.
This feature is still in its early stages of development, and the final design and functionality may change before its official release. Additionally, the exact release date remains uncertain as the company continues testing and refinement. WhatsApp is also working on other features, like Google Translate integrating within chats, and AI sticker generation.
Once implemented, the new file-sharing feature is expected to work across different platforms, including both Android and iOS devices. Maintaining compatibility regardless of the user's phone or their contact's phone is a big win for the company nonetheless. WhatsApp has also confirmed that the file sharing process will be protected by end-to-end encryption.
