The under-display biometric fingerprint sensor tech announced by Synaptics last week will debut on the Vivo Xplay 7, according to Forbes. When Synaptics introduced Clear ID, it said that it would appear on a top-five OEM vendor handset in January, with Vivo now singled out as the vendor concerned. It could debut as early as CES 2017 and beat Samsung to market in doing so.
Forbes has had a chance to play with the Vivo Xplay 7 ahead of its launch and says the new technology is very promising. It is said to be fast, simply and responsive with the only caveat being that it required pressing the ‘On’ button to activate. At that point, an image of a fingerprint illuminates the display prompting the user to touch it. Forbes expect Vivo to introduce a ‘tap-to-wake’ function before it hits the market to make the authentication process even easier.
According to Synaptics, its Clear ID technology is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition systems like Apple’s Face ID, but remains relatively secure. Synaptics says that it has used AI to develop an adaptive fingerprint template matching system that helps to protect the system from being spoofed. It also uses TLS protocol support, ECC authentication and AES encryption on the sensor to encrypt data going to the processor.
