Update: GitHub appears to be back up
Service has been restored for us as of now. GitHub's status page shows the company mitigated the issue as of 16:59 UTC on August 17, GitHub says it is continuing to monitor for stability, and has not yet posted a formal resolution.
GitHub engineers are having a rough day, with the company's status page confirming error rates of approximately 20% across web and API traffic as of 14:04 UTC on Aug 17. Archive downloads and raw repository content have been hit even harder, with error rates of approximately 50%. Pull requests, Issues, Webhooks, and Actions have all been flagged as degraded since around 13:41 UTC. Downdetector also reports that user complaints began spiking around 13:30 UTC
GitHub hasn't identified a root cause yet, and investigations are ongoing.
