The United States Commerce Department is figuring out ways to keep Intel afloat after it posted $16.3 billion in losses this quarter. One of the options includes a merger with market rivals such as AMD and Marvell.

A recent rumour stated Apple and Samsung are looking to acquire Intel. Previously, Qualcomm was also speculated to be on the prowl. The prospect of Intel merging with another company might not be all that implausible now, especially after it reported $16.6 billion in net losses this quarter. Apparently, even the United States government thinks this might be a good idea.

Semfor reports the United States Commerce Department is looking at different ways to bail Intel out. While a direct cash injection via the CHIPS act will help, it will apparently be not enough. The department could "encourage" a merger with one of its rivals such as AMD and Marvell. While not explicitly mentioned Apple feels like a viable candidate because it is flush with cash and also in the business of manufacturing high-end chip, and most importantly, an American company.

Intel seems to be somewhat in the clear for now after it received a massive order from the United States Department of Defense and Amazon Web Services. Intel is counting on the success of its 18A node to make its much-needed comeback. However, it is a bit early to speculate what the government has in store for Intel, but it shouldn't be long before we find out.
