A Canadian UPS employee has been arrested for allegedly stealing 866 Apple products worth C$1.3 million from a logistics center and selling them online.

30-year-old Canadian Orville Martirez Beltrano had been working at a UPS logistics center in Winnipeg, Canada, since 2013, most recently as a local sorting manager, until he was fired by UPS following his arrest in January. The former UPS employee allegedly stole a total of 866 Apple products to the value of C$1.3 million between September 2023 and January 2024.

The stolen goods are said to have been sold on Kijiji, an online platform in the style of eBay Classifieds, but at relatively low prices, as the accused "only" generated and transferred C$232,000 to his bank account over the entire period. The profits were reportedly used to repay a loan on a white Audi purchased in 2021 for C$60,000 and to finance the purchase of a house worth C$630,000. After Martirez's car was searched, C$9,000 in cash and C$9,100 worth of jewelry were also recovered.

According to a Global News report, the defendant has already confessed to stealing and selling Apple products from the logistics center and that the cash seized came from the sale of those products. If the court agrees, the house, car, cash and jewelry will be confiscated to pay for the damages incurred by UPS. Officially, UPS "loses" less than 1% of all packages; incidents like this explain how it is possible in some cases for packages to disappear directly at the logistics center.
