Trekstor Primebook C13

With the Primebook C13, the manufacturer Trekstor has a low-priced 13-inch convertible on offer. The price-to-performance ratio is aimed at buyers who pay attention not only to the cost but also to the design, and who can live with low hardware specs. The Primebook C13 is very well-built. All the joints are level and clean. Nothing creaks or wobbles. The matte silver case looks appealing. Two 360-degree hinges ensure that the display can stay in a set position. The device is usable in both tablet and laptop modes. The body is a mixture of aluminum panels and plastic panels and uses a 360-degree hinge to fold back completely on itself to enter tablet mode. The screen of the Primebook C13 has a resolution of 1.920 x 1.080. The display has a low brightness. However, this also applies to other low-priced convertibles. Because of a reflective screen surface, it can be difficult to read the screen content in brightly-lit environments. The contrast ratio is on the normal level for a device with this price tag. The Primebook C13 uses the Celeron N3350 as the CPU and Intel’s HD Graphics 500 as the GPU. With 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage space, this is the only hardware configuration in which the Trekstor Primebook C13 is available. To expand the storage capacity of the laptop, a user can either put in an M.2 SSD (an M.2 slot is located behind a maintenance hatch) or insert an SD card. SD cards with a capacity of up to 128 GB are supported. As for graphics processor, it has Intel’s HD Graphics 500, a budget graphics adapter which is not fit for running demanding video games. However, simple, casual games from the Windows Store can be run smoothly. Because the Primebook C13 has no fan, there is no fan noise to talk about. When idle, the fanless Primebook C13 remains very cool. However, it can get quite hot under load. The user can play back audio content, with a few limitations. Even though the Primebook C13 lacks when it comes to bass, the mids and the highs are reproduced quite well. The Primebook C13 exhibits a moderate power draw. Sure, there are more energy-efficient devices out there, but when taking the screen size and the hardware configuration into consideration the power draw of this device appears to be quite acceptable. Under load, the energy consumption of this device rises to over 20 watts. The Primebook C13 offers only a limited set of options for connecting external devices. The convertible can be connected to an external monitor via Micro-HDMI. USB ports are also available. All USB ports use the USB 3.1 standard. One of the ports is a Type-C port. The Trekstor Primebook C13 measures 320 x 210 x 15 mm (12.6 x 8.27 x 0.59 inches), weighs 1.39 kg (3.06 pounds). Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

Trekstor Primebook C11

The TrekStor Primebook C11 achieves what only very few notebooks have achieved so far: It is both good looking and a price-performance winner. The main reasons for this are the long battery life and the very good touch display. The Primebook C11 is a visually and technically almost identical but smaller version of the Primebook C13. The Primebook C11 is not a standard notebook, rather it is much more flexible in application. It can be used as a touchscreen device if the user desires that, and it is also foldable through 360°. This function gives you a variety of different options. For example, it allows the device to be used as a tablet too, with minimum fuss. The workmanship of this laptop is good, and the only 16mm thick metal housing leaves a stable impression. Beneath the compact aluminum case, users have an energy-saving Intel Celeron N3350 processor, which also ensures that users can work in peace and quiet. Furthermore, 4 GB of DDR3 memory and 64 GB of eMMC memory are installed. The performance is therefore only slightly above average; it is sufficient for everyday office and surfing tasks as well as occasional movie nights. The 11-inch device is somewhat easier to handle than the 13-inch model, which is most noticeable in tablet mode. The glossy Full-HD IPS display has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and offers great color space coverage. Although the surface still reflects, thanks to the improved maximum brightness (up to 251 cd/m²), outdoor work is much more pleasant. The display of the Primebook C11 is really worth a look for photo enthusiasts. The screen manages to cover over 90 % of the sRGB color space, so images should be rendered accurately.

The keyboard scores with crisp back pressure, which is not self-evident due to the small stroke. The mouse replacement is pleasantly wide, has a roughened surface and does not stick. However, the fingerprint sensor is located in the upper left corner of the touchpad, which reduces the effective usable area. The touchscreen convinces both in the notebook and in tablet mode with a fast and accurate recognition rate. This is why there is no need to connect any conventional input devices to the convertible. In terms of ports, the Primebook C11 is limited to the bare minimum. There are three USB ports (2x USB 3.0, 1x Type C), and a fingerprint sensor to unlock the device. There is no HDMI port and no SD-card slot. Also missing is a classic LAN port. Therefore, a user can access the internet with the Primebook C11 only via the WLAN-AC module. The battery runtimes also invite longer trips. In normal usage with casual web browsing, the battery lasts about 10 hours. With continuous video playback, the battery can still last more than 8 hours.

Can it be smaller? Trekstor takes the design and hardware of the Primebook C13 and crams it all into an 11-inch case. What we get as a result is the Primeboon C11, which we examine in this review to see whether the same hardware components can offer similar performance in a smaller form-factor.

Trekstor:

TrekStor GmbH is a German hardware company which sells entertainment electronics such as USB sticks, external hard drives, satellite receivers, MP3 players, e-book readers, tablet computers and smartphones. The predecessor company TrekStor GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2001. After an insolvency in 2009 the renamed Trekstor GmbH became a subsidiary of the Chinese Telefield International Holdings Limited.

There were several reviews in 2014 and 2015, yet hardly any in 2016. The ratings tended to be below average to poor. The market shares are low (as of 2016).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 500: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Apollo Lake series.

Intel HD Graphics 505: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Apollo Lake series.

Intel UHD Graphics 605: Integrated low-end graphics adapter with DirectX 12 support, which can be found in some ULV SoCs from the Gemini Lake series. Compared to the HD Graphics 505, the 605 offers improved display outputs.

Intel Celeron:

Celeron N3350: An Apollo Lake family, dual-core, ultra-low-power processor (SoC) that saw the light of day in 2016. Its two cores run at 1.1 GHz to 2.4 GHz; these are not Hyper-Threading-enabled meaning there are no additional threads. This chip has a fairly competent integrated graphics solution, the Intel HD Graphics 500, and eats very little (~6 W). The Celeron N3350 is based on the Goldmont CPU microarchitecture that came to replace Silvermont (2013), bringing with it several welcome improvements. The CPU is Secure Boot-compatible; technically, it will have no issue running 64-bit Windows 11. The average N3350 in our database is just as fast as the venerable Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 is in multi-thread loads; the two cores of this Celeron trail behind a single core of any half-decent CPU such as the Intel Core i3-7130U.

Intel Pentium:

Pentium N4200: An Apollo Lake family, quad-core, ultra-low-power processor (SoC) that saw the light of day in 2016. Its four CPU cores run at 1.1 GHz to 2.5 GHz; these are not Hyper-Threading-enabled meaning there are no additional threads. This chip has a fairly competent integrated graphics solution, the Intel HD Graphics 505, and eats very little (~6 W). The Pentium N4200 is based on the Goldmont CPU microarchitecture that came to replace Silvermont (2013), bringing with it several welcome improvements. The CPU is Secure Boot-compatible; technically, it will have no issue running 64-bit Windows 11. The average N4200 in our database competes with the Core i5-3339Y, a low-power SoC launched in 2013, in multi-thread performance.

Intel Gemini Lake:

Pentium N5000: Low power quad-core SoC from the Gemini Lake series for inexpensive notebooks. Runs with clocks between 1.1-2.7 GHz and integrates a DirectX 12 capable graphics adapter.

78.02%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
