The Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210 is compact, battery efficient, and priced so that parents have enough money left over for other school-related necessities. Students, however, will find that design appeal is lacking in this laptop, as the frame is too thick and clunky compared with top-tier budget laptops, like the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl and HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx, both Editors' Choices.

The Satellite L745D might seem low-spec and overpriced. But maybe you shouldn’t compare it with other similarly-priced notebooks. Compare it with other Toshibas. Not be the slimmest laptop on the market, or the fastest. But the RAM is upgradeable to 8GB, which will make a big difference.

Normally, the holiday "doorbuster" special tends to be a $300-range machine, with a 15-inch screen, a low-end chassis, and an underpowered processor. Budget shoppers had best look elsewhere than the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220. A low-end processor and middling speed aren't worth the $499 asking price, and we've seen many laptops in the same range that offer more.

The Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220RD may not impress you with its performance, but its $500 price tag make it well worth your consideration. The Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK sells for only $20 more, and offers a Core i5 processor and all the improved performance that comes with it. Of course, if you can afford an extra $150, check out Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL5, which offers a lot more power and features.

We perceive two kinds of budget-laptop shoppers: those who want the best value, and those who want to spend as little as possible, no matter what. This budget laptop, with a nice 14-inch LCD, is fine for light browsing and computing. It's only a good choice, though, if speed and portability aren't top concerns, and price is.

For a budget model, the Toshiba L745D-S4220GR has sufficient power. The screen is also above average for this class of notebook. Battery life is sufficient to last through classes of 3 and a half hours. And the computer stays cool and quiet when operating. Unfortunately, the touchpad is so problematic that I cannot recommend using the notebook without an external mouse, and the keyboard would have to remain covered in order to avoid the need to clean it constantly. While the notebook is capable of performing well, its usability leaves something to be desired.

The Toshiba Satellite L745-S4130 has a 14-inch display that is backed up with good performance thanks to the Intel Core i3 CPU and 4GB of RAM. While it is slightly thicker than some other 14-inch laptops, it has a really great-looking display that makes it stand out from the rest.

Toshiba knows how to make a good budget laptop. For $569, the Toshiba Satellite L745-S4130 offers an attractive design, a bright 14-inch display and enough power to perform everyday tasks and play casual games. However, for $20 less, consumers can purchase the Dell Inspiron 14z, which has a smaller hard drive but a sleeker aluminum chassis and longer battery life. But if you happen to come across the Toshiba Satellite L745-S4130, it's a strong value.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
