Over the past few weeks, the companion Android app for the popular open-source ham radio transceiver project has received many notable updates. The features list keeps growing as more flexible programming options and an official 1.0 version release join the mix.

For those new to the kv4p HT project, this open-source project provides a simple, easy-to-follow list of instructions to transform $35 worth of components into a full-blown Android-powered ham radio transceiver. The plug-and-play radio project also features a companion Android application to access key features of the project, such as:

  • Text communication over APRS with the built-in 1200 baud modem
  • Lived closed captioning for supported devices
  • 44kHz 8-bit ADC/DAC audio, with filters and squelch

Now officially in v1.2.3, the kv4p HT app has launched some new quality-of-life features. In addition to several bug fixes, Users can now use the Android app to flash or upgrade the firmware on users' kv4p HT build, which means a computer is no longer required. Additionally, the app makes changes to tuning and frequencies, which include:

  • Tuning in 500Hz increments with a 4th decimal place is allowed. This supports regions with 12.5kHz channel spacing.
  • Users can set a maximum frequency in Settings for regions with 146MHz as the top of the 2M amateur band.
  • Better APRS UI when decoding APRS messages in the "Text chat" view

The quickstart guide on the kv4p HT website has also seen some updates for users looking to build their first radio. There is an updated list of hardware options and a new 3D printable case that supports a new connector style needed for the ESP32, which lies at the heart of the build. Additionally, as the project continues to grow, it appears that build components are going out of stock, so users are encouraged to check back to the site to find updates on changes to the build process or to submit any feedback they'd like to share with the creator.
