The future of Microsoft Windows Phone OS could be bleak
Well-known Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott is stating that the Surface team has absorbed a significant chunk of the Lumia team and are now working as one unit on a set of tablets or smartphones. Details on these potential products are unknown as even the source is unsure if they will ever be released or will continue to carry the Surface name. Thurrott himself is doubtful of any potential "Surface Phone" devices despite the success of the current Surface lineup of tablets.
A direct consequence of the merger is that Windows 10 Mobile may be in trouble. Microsoft has likely realized that its mobile OS will never catch up to iOS, Android, or even Symbian as its market share continues to flatline. The upcoming mainstream Lumia 650 is now rumored for a delay until sometime next month while sources close to Windows Central echo the statements that Windows Lumia smartphones may be coming to an end.
These disappointing murmurs remain nothing but rumors for now. The flagship Lumia 950 XL is already proving itself to be an impressive smartphone midway into our tests with our full review coming up very shortly. Mainstream and more affordable Lumia smartphones are expected to make appearances at MWC 2016 to supplement the flagship 950 series.
