The Outer Worlds launched on October 25, 2019. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Private Division, it comes from the same team behind Fallout: New Vegas. Their signature style is instantly recognizable – dark humor, branching dialogue and meaningful player choices that shape both story and gameplay. The German gaming magazine GameStar praised these strengths in its review, highlighting the naturally written, witty conversations and the freedom to approach missions in different ways. The outlet even called it “the funniest role-playing game in a long time.”
In The Outer Worlds, players awaken from cryo-sleep aboard a colony ship in the Halcyon system, a distant star system ruled by ruthless mega-corporations. It doesn’t take long before you get caught in a power struggle between rebels, shady companies and eccentric scientists, forcing you to choose where your loyalties lie. The game offers a classic first-person action RPG experience, complete with skill trees, companions, tactical combat and choices that genuinely impact the story. Whether you prefer sneaking, talking your way through problems or going in guns blazing, the game adapts to your style, all wrapped in its signature offbeat humor.
GameStar gave The Outer Worlds a solid 83 out of 100, though the review wasn’t without criticism. It pointed out that the game world can feel lifeless at times, combat lacks challenge, and both the main story and quests tend to be shallow, often relying on fetch tasks. On Metacritic, the RPG holds a Metascore of 82 and a User Score of 7.3. Since its release, over 22,500 reviews have been posted on Steam, with 82% of them positive.
